🐑❤️ Movie Review 'The Sheep Detectives' - A Heartfelt, Humorous Mystery with Spiritual Themes

I wanted to share a movie review with you all for The Sheep Detectives, which arrived in theaters in May and on Amazon Prime Video on June 24, 2026.

I streamed this movie for free last week through my Prime account, and days after seeing it, various themes from the story are still on my heart, and I wanted to share those thoughts with you all...

Movie Review - The Sheep Detectives:

First of all, this movie is labeled as a PG-rated family-friendly mystery – although I want to caution that this is a murder mystery. It’s not graphic by any means (think your standard Hallmark or Great American Family mystery), but younger children may become emotionally attached to the character who is killed and could be troubled by the loss.

To be completely honest, even though it happens fairly early in the story, I was already attached to this character, too!

In the beginning of the movie, we are introduced to George Hardy (Hugh Jackman), a devoted shepherd who takes good care of his sheep each day and even names each one. At the end of the day, the sheep gather around George as he reads murder mysteries aloud to them... and, to his surprise, they seem genuinely interested in the stories.

At first, George thinks it might be silly, but his sheep are essentially his family, and he enjoys caring for them and making them happy. There are constant themes in the movie taken from Christianity, as the Good Shepherd (God) also cares intimately for his sheep.

I also want to note that the sheep in this movie do talk to each other (which is very cute!), but they don't speak to humans. Of course, that element is something that will appeal to children, but I want to caution that due to some of the violence and sadness, this is not a movie, in my opinion, for really young viewers.

Spiritual Themes:

While The Sheep Detectives is not a faith-based movie, there are Christian themes woven throughout the story in some very interesting ways. God is compared to the Great Shepherd and a lamb, which I thought was beautiful.

However, I want you to be aware that there are a few religious misinterpretations in this film, as well. At one point, the sheep misunderstand the meaning of communion and remark, “Poor God,” thinking that he turns into bread and is actually eaten. The sheep are also confused about the afterlife, believing that when they die, they turn into clouds. While the idea is presented in a somewhat innocent and sweet way, it is certainly a misconception. Thankfully, the truth is clarified later in the movie.

On a positive spiritual note, there are also beautiful parallels to the lost sheep. At one point, George discovers a sheep being mistreated and pays to rescue it and bring it home, which symbolizes Jesus' payment for our debts. George is also shown carrying that sheep in the very same way Jesus is often depicted carrying a sheep on his shoulders.

(SPOILER)
Later, this same sheep gives his life to save others, which was such a touching and truly unexpected, heartbreaking scene that brought tears to my eyes; it was another powerful parallel to the Lamb of God who gave his life on the cross to save the lost.
(End of SPOILER)

Other Movie Themes:

Along with the intrigue of the mystery, which is interesting to try to solve, there’s also a lot of heart and humor in this movie. I really enjoyed Lily, the main female sheep character, who is smart, gentle, soft-spoken, tender-hearted, and wonderfully clever at solving mysteries. She quickly became one of my favorites!

The police officer is also a lot of fun to watch. He is a novice when it comes to crime-solving, but with a little help from the sheep, he slowly begins piecing together the clues and unraveling the mystery.

Of course, watching talking sheep assist with a murder investigation makes for some very unique, and often quite funny, detective work!

Language:

When three of the lead sheep - Sebastian, Lily, & Mopple - are walking into town for the first time, they pass the church – where Sebastian says God lives. This is also when Sebastian discusses God as a shepherd and a lamb, and he mentions that God d*mns things, but Lily and Mopple mistake that word for Beavers damming things. I don’t recall any other language in the movie besides this.

Final Thoughts:

It is definitely a movie I would encourage parents to preview before watching with children, especially because of the murder and the emotional weight of the story. But for older children and families who enjoy a unique mystery with plenty of heart, this is one that may give you quite a bit to talk about afterward. You may want to discuss the various faith elements in the film and how we are all lost sheep in need of our Savior, the Good Shepherd.

Overall, this movie is heartwarming, funny, and sweet. In the end, it has positive messages about loving those around you, even those who don’t exactly fit in. The baby winter lamb truly stole my heart, and I’m certain he’ll steal yours, too!

Where to watch:

I streamed this movie free with Amazon Prime. If you have a Prime account, *click here* to see if you can stream free, as well.

Or, *click here* for streaming price options for non-Prime members.

The Sheep Detectives is also available to order on DVD and Blu-ray.

Are You Watching the New Mystery Series, Blue Skies?

If you’re looking for a cozy mystery series, I’d love to recommend the UP Faith & Family original, Blue Skies!

I’ve mentioned this series before, but I recently had the chance to watch the first three episodes, and they were all quite enjoyable and family-friendly overall. That said, as with most mystery stories, there are elements of violence and murder that are definitely too intense for very young viewers, so a little discretion is wise.

Otherwise, Blue Skies carries that same comforting, small-town mystery charm you might feel from Hallmark or Great American Family.

The series stars Scarlet Hunter as Detective Jodi Larsen and Markian Tarasiuk (Mistletoe Connection, Christmas Jars) as Ryan Miller.

It’s an intriguing story that follows Jodi, a former member of the military, as she returns to her hometown and begins working at Crystal Ridge National Park as a criminal investigator.

While reconnecting with her father is a meaningful part of her homecoming, she also forms a special bond with a stray dog she names Blue, an incredibly gifted tracking dog with a natural instinct for search and rescue.

Along the way, she reconnects with Ryan, a former high school friend who now runs a local coffee shop and rock-climbing wall. He's clearly someone who shares her love for the outdoors and a bit of adventure.

Each episode presents a new mystery as we watch Jodi settle into her new role, build relationships with her park colleagues, and partner with her loyal K9 companion, who quickly becomes a favorite among the team.

It was also interesting to see an appearance from Chesapeake Shores and Mistletoe Connection actress, Jessica Sipos (seen in the picture above).

You can stream Blue Skies on UP Faith & Family or through Amazon. There are 8 episodes in the series and new episodes drop every Thursday - ending on April 9th.

And if you’ve already seen some of the episodes, too, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

At this moment, I don’t currently have Hallmark+, but I’m hoping/planning to subscribe again soon, especially with the new frontier series, Hope Valley 1874, on the way! That alone has me so intrigued.

And if you haven’t heard, there’s a wonderful offer right now for new Hallmark+ subscribers. When you use the code HOPE50, you’ll receive 50% off the annual subscription (available through March 26th). Such a great deal!

I also wanted to share that one of the Amazon reviews for the book Paris Is Always a Good Idea mentions that the novel includes what they describe as “graphic sexual content.” Of course, even if that content is part of the book, it doesn’t mean it will be included in the series adaptation. We’ve seen in other book-to-film projects that Hallmark has adjusted certain elements to better fit their audience and style. I simply wanted to pass this along so you’re aware - as far the book goes. I would never expect Hallmark to include any graphic scenes in their productions; it's just not fitting to their brand.

I’m truly hoping Paris is Always a Good Idea turns out to be a beautiful, memorable series. I can already picture Lacey in the most gorgeous dresses… and since it’s being filmed in Paris, I’m fully expecting at least a beret or two! I mean, when in Rome, or rather, when in Paris! Right?

Hope you enjoyed
this exciting filming news!

Hope Valley: 1874 – First-Look – Coming to Hallmark+ March 21!

Hallmark has just released a new promo for "Hope Valley: 1874," the new prequel series to “When Calls the Heart,” starring Bethany Joy Lenz, Benjamin Ayres and Jill Hennessy! I also spotted the well-known actor Neal McDonough in the new preview.

The new series will begin streaming - March 21st exclusively on Hallmark+.

See the new promo and more details on the series from the Hallmark press release below. Plus, see my thoughts at the end of this post…

Hope Valley: 1874 - Promo:

THE DAWN OF A NEW FRONTIER
HALLMARK’S HIGHLY ANTICIPATED
PREQUEL SERIES
TO WHEN CALLS THE HEART
HOPE VALLEY: 1874
PREMIERES SATURDAY, MARCH 21
EXCLUSIVELY ON HALLMARK+

New Episode Available to Stream Every Thursday Beginning March 26
Starring Bethany Joy Lenz, Benjamin Ayres and Jill Hennessy

BURBANK, CA – January 30, 2026 – Hallmark announced today that Hope Valley: 1874, the new prequel series to the beloved When Calls the Heart, will premiere Saturday, March 21, exclusively on Hallmark+, with a new episode premiering every Thursday beginning March 26. The network also unveiled a first look at the trailer for the eight-episode series, giving fans an exciting glimpse into the origins of the community that would one day become Hope Valley.

As previously announced, the series stars Bethany Joy Lenz (A Biltmore Christmas), Benjamin Ayres (The Santa Class), Jill Hennessy (City on a Hill), Roan Curtis (Firefly Lane) and Lachlan Quarmby (Providence Falls). Joining the ensemble are Jedidiah Goodacre (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) as Clayton Cooley, a ruggedly handsome blacksmith, Chelsea Hobbs (Deck the Halls on Cherry Lane) as Peggy McCabe, the wife of Tom’s (Ayres) foreman Nash as portrayed by Brad Abramenko (A Splash of Love).

Set in 1874, the series explores the earliest days of the frontier settlement that later became Hope Valley, chronicling the courage, resilience and relationships that laid the foundation for the close-knit town viewers have come to love. Lenz portrays Rebecca Clarke, who travels from her home city of Chicago to the Western Canadian frontier with her 11-year-old-daughter Sarah (Mila Morgan, The Holiday Sitter). But when her wagon breaks down, and she realizes the boardinghouse is not as advertised, Rebecca has no choice but to accept help from local rancher and confirmed bachelor, Tom Moore (Ayres). Despite her best intentions to remain unattached, Bella can't help but slowly fall for Tom and develop a friendship with tenacious pioneer woman Hattie Quinn (Hennessy). Hattie’s daughter Olivia (Curtis) helps run their trading post and catches the eye of Constable Alexander Vaughn (Quarmby), much to the dismay of Clayton (Goodacre), who harbors feelings for her.

Showcasing themes of perseverance and romance, this series explores the journey of a mother as she discovers a new chapter in her life as she helps forge what starts out as collection of isolated settlers into a small close-knit community during the rugged and hopeful Pioneer Era. This prequel to Hallmark’s historical drama series, When Calls the Heart, will take viewers back in time to follow the early settlers of the community that will one day become the beloved frontier town of Hope Valley.

Hope Valley: 1874 is from All Canadian Entertainment production company. Executive producers of the series include Brad Krevoy, Brian Bird, Michael Landon Jr., Amy Hartwick, Olivia Krevoy, Vicki Sotheran, Greg Malcolm, Alfonso Moreno and Susie Belzberg. Mike Rohl and Elizabeth Stewart are co-executive producers, and Jennifer Siddle and Melody Fox serve as consulting producers.

My Quick Take:

I’m absolutely loving this beautiful first look at Hope Valley: 1874. It truly captures the spirit of the pioneer era and truly feels like a step back in time. With When Calls the Heart now set in the 1920s and moving further away from the early American frontier, it’s especially heartwarming to see a new series that takes us back to those humble, hardworking pioneer days.

This glimpse of Hope Valley: 1874 is already giving me the same comforting, nostalgic feeling as classic shows like Little House on the Prairie, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Christy, Little Men, When Hope Calls, and of course, the early seasons of When Calls the Heart, along with Hallmark's Love Comes Softly films. There’s something so special about stories set in a simpler time, filled with resilience, faith, community, and hope.

Based on the promo, which highlights a close-knit community and everyday struggles of frontier life, I have a feeling this new series coming to Hallmark+ this spring will become another deeply beloved period drama.

I’d love to know what you think, too. Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

Blessings to you all,
