Movie Review – How Angel Studios’ Animated Film ‘David’ Touched My Heart and Deepened My Faith

Over the Christmas holiday, I was blessed to see the new animated musical David with my family, and I just had to share how incredibly moving this film is. From the very first moments, this movie captured our hearts and reminded us of the beauty of trusting God’s plan.

Like many of you, I grew up watching wonderful animated classics- from Charlie Brown to Superbook to lots of early Disney movies, and this new production from Angel Studios easily stands alongside the best of them. It is beautifully made and filled with inspiration, humor, and heart.

I know animation is often thought of as “just for kids,” but this film is something truly special. My entire family enjoyed it immensely. No matter your age, David is one of those rare, inspiring movies that truly draws you in and gently strengthens your faith along the way. Instantly, I found myself completely engaged in David's story. At times, I was on the edge of my seat, laughing one moment and teary-eyed the next.

We first meet David as a young shepherd faithfully watching over his sheep. In an exciting opening scene, he courageously protects them from a fierce lion, immediately revealing his strength and bravery. Yet what stood out even more was his tenderness and compassion. From the very beginning, we see that David is a young man after God’s own heart… seeking to obey Him, even while struggling to understand why God would choose him to be the future king of Israel.

It is truly awe-inspiring to watch David grow in faith as he follows the path God sets before him, beginning with the moment the prophet Samuel anoints him with oil as God’s chosen replacement for King Saul.

One of the most touching elements of the film is the loving guidance of David’s mother. She is portrayed as a woman of deep faith who believes God is weaving her son into something far greater than he can yet see. Throughout the film, she quietly works on a tapestry, which is symbolic of God’s plan. As each thread is woven, we begin to see important changes unfold in David's life.

There’s even a bit of gentle humor when David asks his mother repeatedly if she’s “stress-weaving,” a fictional comment that is, of course, not found in Scripture, yet one that never detracts from the true heart of the story. Instead, it adds warmth and relatability.

One of the most meaningful exchanges happens when David, as an adult, feels completely defeated:

Mother: “How’s your tapestry working out?”

David: “Oh… way, way worse than I thought. I don’t feel like I’m being woven so much as being stabbed.”

Mother: “Sometimes a thread is pulled so tight, you think it might snap- but trust the Weaver.”

David: “I feel like I snapped a while ago.”

Mother: “Then trust Him to tie you back together.”

What a powerful reminder of trusting God, even when we don’t understand what He’s doing.

Though David is the youngest and often overlooked, God chooses him for his heart. The Spirit of the Lord comes upon him, marking him as Israel’s future king. Throughout the film, we witness David’s relationship with King Saul shift, from admiration and affection to jealousy and fear as Saul realizes David has been chosen to replace him.

Time and again, David’s faith is tested. Through trials, danger, and uncertainty, we see his courage and trust in God deepen and mature.

The adult version of David is voiced by Christian singer Phil Wickham, who also performs several inspirational songs throughout the film. Songs like “I Will Not Be Afraid” and “Follow the Light” are not just entertaining; they minister to the heart. The music was deeply meaningful, speaking right to my spirit, and I found myself instantly humming along.

One line near the end of the film has stayed with me. When David is facing another challenge that seems insurmountable, he courageously says, “I would rather take my chances following the light than choose to live in the dark.” That powerful statement was such a strong reminder that even when we’re scared, choosing God’s light is always better than letting fear hold us back.

I know many are wondering if this is a movie children can see, and my answer is yes, though parents should be aware that there are short battle scenes that may feel intense for very young viewers. Nothing graphic or violent is shown. Even David’s defeat of Goliath with his sling-shot and one stone is handled tastefully, clearly portraying good triumphing over evil.

Please consider taking your family or a friend to see this beautiful film - currently showing in theaters. I truly believe the spiritual depth and heartfelt message of David will encourage your faith, just as it has mine.

UPDATE (January 28th): You can now stream the David animation movie through Angel Studios with a paid subscription membership.

And more great news... the movie David (the bonus edition!) is now available to pre-order on DVD! The release date is March 17, 2026- the perfect timing right before Easter! Click here for details!

‘UNSUNG HERO’ – Movie Review from It’s a Wonderful Movie – “I Can’t Stop Singing Its Praises!” 🎬 See Here:

I am ecstatic to share with you all today that I was blessed to be one of the media/entertainment outlets provided a screener for the new biopic faith-based film, ‘Unsung Hero,’ which is based on the lives of the Smallbone family.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Smallbones, they are a family with seven children, three of whom became well-known Christian singers- eldest daughter, Rebecca St. James, and sons Joel and Luke Smallbone, of the renowned Christian pop duo— for KING & COUNTRY.

This powerful film, which officially opens in theaters across the country on Friday, April 26, 2024, is one, I pray, that will truly move you and anyone who sees it— emotionally and spiritually.

‘Unsung Hero’ is an inspirational, family-friendly film that is appropriate for all ages; it is rated PG by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America).

I hope you enjoy my movie review below…

“The Proof of Your Love” ♪

Since seeing ‘Unsung Hero,’ I can’t stop singing its praises!

The Smallbone family had it all while living in Australia, according to what the world deems as success— wealth, a large home, a swimming pool, and all the comforts a lavish lifestyle affords. But when the father, David, loses it all after making some bad investments as a promoter in the Christian music industry, he and his wife, Helen, feel God’s calling to leave Australia and move to America with their six children.

Just when they believe things will turn around, another deal goes bad for David after they move into their small rental home in Nashville, Tennessee. With money scarce, no furniture, and little food, the family has to rely heavily on their faith and each other to earn money by cleaning homes and doing lawn service. David often has to set aside his pride to provide for his family.

It’s beautiful to watch the parents and children come together and rely on The Lord to see them through this difficult season in their lives. Over and over, even when one door closes, they continue to see the proof of God’s love in their lives as another window opens.

“Fix My Eyes” ♪

When the Smallbone family is down to almost their last penny, their mother insists that they need to pray for everything they need. So, with scrap paper, they made two lists (seen in the image above) on the wood-paneled wall in their rental home.

The first list was *Please*, and the second list was *Thank You*. Under *Please*, they would list their prayers, which were numerous, and as each one was answered, they would move those prayers under *Thank You*. It was especially beautiful to see the children's optimism in this spiritual activity, as it was their faith in motion. As each prayer was answered, the thank yous got longer, and the needs under the please list became shorter.

Even when there were many obstacles in their way that seemed insurmountable, the Smallbone family fixed their eyes on God, and He saw them through their hardships with big and small miracles.

“JOY, Let it Move You…” ♪

While' Unsung Hero' contains many intense moments of struggles and adversity, it also features many scenes with lighthearted, joyful comedy.

And what a joy it was to see such an amazing cast! The production quality matched the remarkable talent chosen to portray these real-life individuals.

Image – Unsung Hero | Copyright, Lionsgate (Loinsgate Entertainment Corp.)

Joel Smallbone –

Christian Singer Joel Smallbone’s portrayal of his father, David, in this film is phenomenal. You can truly feel the passion in his voice and the intensity in his reactions, especially when he is at his lowest. A few minutes into the movie, I completely forgot he was singer Joel Smallbone of for KING & COUNTRY, as he embodied the look and mannerisms of his father, burdened with the task of caring for a large family.

Although this is not Joel’s first acting role, his performance in this is so impressive, I wouldn’t be surprised if this catapults his acting career into making even more inspirational films like this.

Image – Unsung Hero | Copyright, Lionsgate (Loinsgate Entertainment Corp.)

Daisy Betts –

Australian Actress Daisy Betts portrays the mother (mum), Helen Smallbone, who not only has the task of rearing 6 children, but as they move to America – she is expecting their 7th child. Daisy's acting in this film, alongside Joel, is spectacular; you truly feel her emotion as she’s doing her best to raise her children and make their new life in Tennessee, even when times are hard, an exciting adventure. As the mother, she is the glue that holds them all together, encouraging them in their walk with God and uplifting their spirits. I was completely moved by her incredible performance.

Releasing this film just before Mother’s Day, I must say, is brilliant, because this film highlights all the joys and hardships of motherhood, while championing her role as the loving nurturer and loyal advocate for her children and husband. It was wonderful to see how being a mother is celebrated in this movie. I was moved to tears countless times by Helen's immense compassion and love for her family, along with her resolute determination to follow God’s will.

Image – Unsung Hero | Copyright, Lionsgate (Loinsgate Entertainment Corp.)

Candace Cameron Bure –

Actress Candace Cameron Bure portrays Kay Albright, a member of their church family who becomes a good friend, along with her husband, Jed, to the Smallbone family after their arrival in Tennessee.

Albright is the perfect last name for Mrs. Kay because she is definitely a bright spot in the lives of the Smallbone family.

It was fun to hear Candace use a southern accent and wear a curly, reddish-brown wig and 90's style of clothing to look more like her real-life counterpart, but more importantly, it was beautiful to see her character, Kay, literally being the hands and feet of Jesus, giving to the Smallbones in their time of need.

This was truly an ideal role for Candace, who enthusiastically shares her love for Jesus through her character and in real life!

Image – Unsung Hero | Copyright, Lionsgate (Loinsgate Entertainment Corp.)

Lucas Black –

As Jed Albright, Actor Lucas Black offers some comedic scenes to the film with his witty southern accent; however, more importantly, Jed offers the love of Christ, as he’s a cheerful giver to the Smallbone family, even if David’s pride often has a hard time receiving.

Image – Unsung Hero | Copyright, Lionsgate (Loinsgate Entertainment Corp.)

And more recognizable talent…

*Actor Jonathan Jackson (Nashville, General Hospital) portrays Christian musician Eddie DeGarmo, who is there for the Smallbone family at a pivotal time.

*Country/Christian Singer, Hillary Scott (Lady A), hits the right note as the church’s worship singer, Luanne Meece.

*Veteran Actor Terry O’Quinn (Lost, Christmas Sail) plays the Smallbone family patriarch, Grandpa James. He has several memorable lines in the film, but one of my favorites is: "Look around you... your faith, your family, that's what makes you rich in life."

*Happy Days sitcom star, Don Most, plays music rep, Pierce.

*Actress Rachel Hendrix (October Baby, Christmas Wishes, and Mistletoe Kisses) portrays a young Amy Grant.

*Christian Singer and Actress Rebecca St. James portrays a flight attendant.

*Luke Smallbone (for KING & COUNTRY) dons a long, bushy wig to portray one of the band members in the Christian rock group, Stryper.

Image – Unsung Hero | Copyright, Lionsgate (Loinsgate Entertainment Corp.)

Although I didn’t recognize all of the children in the film from previous works, their performances are all outstanding, and I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if many of them are breakout stars in the making.

*Kirrilee Berger (Country Comfort) portrays eldest daughter, Rebecca Smallbone.

Image – Unsung Hero | Copyright, Lionsgate (Loinsgate Entertainment Corp.)

“Burn the Ships” ♪

Fun scene moment: Near the beginning of the film, the family is running through the airport after being held at border patrol, and I couldn’t help but get a flashback of the movie Home Alone in my mind as the family races to catch their next flight. Thankfully, no child is left behind!

This scene also symbolized to me - their unwavering determination to plod forward in their belief that God was leading them to America. In theory, they were like pirates burning their ship and not looking back.

Image – Unsung Hero | Copyright, Lionsgate (Loinsgate Entertainment Corp.)

“The Little Drummer Boy” ♪

Christmas feels in ‘Unsung Hero’:

Just like the Little Drummer Boy plays his best for Jesus in the aforementioned song, which is a well-known trademark for the For King & Country duo, later in the film, the Smallbone’s faith is tested once again at Christmastime when the children, who are doing their best to please God, pray for the gifts they want Santa to bring them on Christmas morning, believing with all of their hearts that God must be close friends with Saint Nick.

Once again, it is precious to see a child's innocent faith, and the church family provides a miracle that will surely warm your heart.

Image – Unsung Hero | Copyright, Lionsgate (Loinsgate Entertainment Corp.)

“God Only Knows…” ♪

When a film is released into the world, one can never foresee the impact it will have, the ripple effect of lives touched— this year, next year, and years to follow.

I absolutely recommend for everyone to see this film – as God only knows the lives ‘Unsung Hero’ will ultimately reach and touch for His Glory!

“Amen…” ♪ (pronounced ah-men)

My prayer is that this film will inspire each person who sees it and touch many lives for the kingdom.

When we are uncertain, Lord, help us to look to you, instruct us, guide us in the way that we should go, and direct our paths. You are our provider and protector.

I pray this movie is an encouragement to believers and a light in the darkness to those who are seeking.

May our faith be refreshened and reawakened!

Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.

🎬 My Review of the Faith-Based Film "Lifemark" - from the Kendrick Brothers and Kirk Cameron 🎥 See Here:

Lifemark Movie Review:

Most of the movies I review here at It’s a Wonderful Movie are generally lighthearted made-for-TV movies, but after viewing the impactful, life-affirming faith-based film, “Lifemark,” which has a limited showing currently in theaters this week, I just had to share my thoughts on this new release with all of you.

First of all, this movie is based on a true story, which was featured in a short documentary titled: “I Lived On Parker Avenue.”

"Lifemark" is a beautiful story about adoption; it is a full-length feature film about the beauty, wonder, and blessing of every life. There are many profoundly deep, pivotal moments in this film that express how fragile and precious life is, especially from the very beginning, in the mother’s womb. One of my favorite lines was when a woman told an expecting mother that her baby had 10 fingers and 10 toes. It is such a powerful statement that I pray touches many hearts and saves countless lives.

18-year-old David Colton knows he was adopted; however, it’s a secret he's kept hidden from his friends all of his life, and yet, he’s genuinely grateful for the wonderful life he has been given with his adoptive parents and grandparents. When David is presented with the possibility of meeting his birth mother following his 18th birthday, he begins to wonder how all the puzzle pieces of his life fit together. Along with his adoptive parents, he sets on a new discovery to fill in all of those pieces of his past – and discovers a whole new future filled with bright possibilities.

"Lifemark" is such a deeply moving, heartwarming film, filled with drama, action, comedy, and faith. I don't want to give away the main storyline, but I believe you’ll instantly be drawn into David’s life story as I was.

*Cast:

Both Kirk Cameron (Fireproof, Growing Pains) and Alex Kendrick (Fireproof, Facing the Giants, Overcomer) executive produced and starred in Lifemark.

Kirk Cameron portrayed the role of David’s adoptive father, Jimmy Colton. The fact that Kirk is the father of four adopted children in real life made his role seem even more authentic, knowing he has felt and experienced many of the same roller coaster of emotions as the adoptive father in the story - of love, uncertainty, gratefulness, worry, and pure joy.

Alex Kendrick portrayed Shawn Cates, the husband of the birth mother. Alex’s brothers, Stephen and Shannon, are also executive producers on this film.

*Other main members of the Lifemark cast include:

Raphael Ruggero (Running the Bases, Camp Hideout), as the adopted son, David Colton,

Rebecca Rogers (Badge of Faith, Texas Rein), as the adopted mother, Susan Colton,

Dawn Long (Take Two, Cowboys), as the birth mother, Melissa Cates,

Justin Sterner (Running the Bases, Into the Spotlight), as David’s best friend, Nate,

and Marisa Lynae Hampton (The Reliant, Into the Spotlight), as the teenage version of the birth mother, Melissa.

*Comedy:

While the movie deals with an important, serious message, there are also plenty of lighthearted moments of levity, mostly from David’s fun, quick-witted friend, Nate, played by Justin Sterner, who was often seen with a camera in hand, filming everyone and everything in sight. He was a definite scene-stealer.

*Raphael Ruggero as David Colton:

Raphael's portrayol of David Colton in Lifemark is truly captivating. His emotion and facial expressions throughout the movie are phenomenal. At one point in the film, his eyes got a little teared up as he thanked his adoptive parents for his incredible life, and I felt mine go misty, too. Raphael is an incredible newcomer and talent; I can't wait to see what projects he does next.

*The film’s message:

-Throughout the film, there is an uplifting, powerful message of life being a precious gift and trusting in God – through all circumstances. When something happens that we don’t quite understand, we must continue to trust that He has an even greater plan.

*Film Rating / Where you can see Lifemark:

Please note: Lifemark is rated PG-13 because it deals with the conversation of teen pregnancy and abortion. There is no language, sex, or violence in the movie. It is suitable for mature pre-teens and up.

If you have the opportunity to see this movie this week, I encourage you to do so. Lifemark is more than just a movie; it will surely have a deep, spiritual impact on your life.

Lifemark was released nationwide in movie theaters on September 9, 2022, for a seven-day run. Details and tickets are available through Fathom Events here:

*Lifemark trailer:

Lifemark is presented by: The Kendrick Brothers, Kirk Cameron Entertainment, and Fathom Events.

If you are not able to view this movie in the theater, I completely understand. Please consider purchasing the DVD or streaming the film when it becomes available.

Welcome back to Hope Springs … home not only of Hadleigh University, but also Martin Luther King Jr. High School, where beloved teacher Grace Wesley helps students understand and enjoy history. Her love of teaching, her love for her students, and her love of life all come from the same place: her love of Christ.

So when Brooke, a hurting student grieving the loss of her brother, reaches out to Grace, their coffee-shop conversation naturally leads to Grace sharing the hope she finds in Christ.

When Brooke later asks an honest question about Jesus in the classroom, Grace’s reasoned response lands her in big trouble—almost before she even finishes giving her answer.

With the principal and superintendent joining forces with a zealous civil liberties group, Grace faces an epic court case that could cost her the career she loves and expel God from the classroom—and the public square—once and for all!

GOD’S NOT DEAD 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to the beloved Pure Flix movie from 2014 and features an all-star cast. Coming to theaters beginning April 1, 2016, GOD’S NOT DEAD 2 will have audiences standing proudly for what they believe … while they still can. Where will you stand?"

I first saw an extended trailer of the movie, "God's Not Dead 2", with my family when we attended the KLOVE Christmas Concert in December, 2015 and I knew I just had to share it with all of you!

Let me tell you... the crowd at the concert, which had been extremely loud, talkative, and boisterous, in between a break of waiting for the next music artist to come out, became in a moment absolutely silent, completely absorbed in this powerful story the moment it hit the big screen in front of us. It was evident by everyone's reaction, we were all in awe of this amazing account, based on a real life event, and how it impacts our life today... how we must as Christians and Americans continue to fight for our way of life and religious freedom, before it's too late.

Movie Trailer - "God's Not Dead 2"::

Actor Jesse Metcalfe, who all of us TV movie watchers know from the Hallmark Channel movie "A Country Wedding" and the much anticipated upcoming Hallmark Summer Series "Chesapeake Shores", stars in this new film "God's Not Dead 2", alongside an all star cast with...

Melissa Joan Hart ("Sabrina", "The Santa Con", "Melissa and Joey"),
David A.R. White (from the original "God's Not Dead", "Faith of our Fathers"),
the late Senator Fred Thompson ("Law &Order", "Secretariat"),
Pat Boone ("April Love", "State Fair"),
Robin Givens ("Head of the Class", "A Christmas to Remember"),
Sadie Robertson ("Duck Dynasty"),
Ray Wise ("Mad Men", "Agent Carter"),
Ernie Hudson ("Miss Congeniality", "Dear Secret Santa"),
Hayley Orrantia ("The Goldbergs"), and many more!!!

Here's a Video Clip of Melissa Joan Hart - behind the scenes of "God's Not Dead 2"::

Interview with Melissa Joan Hart and Jesse Metcalfe on "God's Not Dead 2"::

The first movie in this series, "God's Not Dead" was a box office hit starring Kevin Sorbo (by the way, another Hallmark star with movie credits: "Avenging Angel", "Shadow on the Mesa", and "The Santa Suit"), Shane Harper (of Disney Channel's "Good Luck, Charlie"), and Dean Cain (Yet another Hallmark alum, "Operation Cupcake",  "The Case for Christmas", etc...). It is an impactful film of faith that takes you through the course of events through many people's lives that don't connect until the end of the story. The first "God's Not Dead" movie is available on DVD.

God's Not Dead 2: The Heart of the Story:

Griswolds, Waltons, Bradys... Will We Also "Love the Coopers"?

There's a new Christmas movie hitting theaters this holiday season titled "Love the Coopers". Now, I haven't seen any rating come out for this movie, yet, so please know I have no idea (at this time) where it will stand in that regard, but I have watched the trailer (included below!), and so far, it looks like a standard funny Christmas comedy.

Love the Coopers has an all-star cast: John Goodman, Diane Keaton, Olivia Wilde, Alan Arkin, Ed Helms, Jake Lacy, Anthony Mackie, Amanda Seyfried, June Squibb, and Marisa Tomei.

Storyline via CBS films: "LOVE THE COOPERS follows the Cooper clan as four generations of extended family come together for their annual Christmas Eve celebration.  As the evening unfolds, a series of unexpected visitors and unlikely events turn the night upside down, leading them all toward a surprising rediscovery of family bonds and the spirit of the holiday."

Judging only from the trailer and images I 've seen... it reminds me of... National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, when Clark wants the family to all be together and have THE Perfect Christmas... or a reunion show of The Waltons, when the family has large gatherings and Jason grabs his guitar, and especially the reunion movie... A Very Brady Christmas, when it's the parents goal to get everyone home for Christmas, and when they do... it's mayhem as everyone has their own personal issues and dramas, they think they are escaping, but instead they bring them home with them.

Here's a Trailer of the movie - Love the Coopers:

To me, it certainly looks like a mix of the Christmas movies I mentioned above, plus they've thrown in a little of the Hallmark movie "Holiday Engagement" with the daughter bringing home a pretend boyfriend for Christmas!

I have heard others compare it to the movie The Family Stone, which is not a family film, and is rated PG-13. So, we will see on this one.

The release date for this film in theaters is November 13th.

Depending on rating, does this look like a movie you would go see at the theater this Christmas Season? Do you think it could possibly be family-friendly? I have a feeling it will be a lot less Waltons, and a lot more Griswold.
