Cupid - Hallmark Channel Movie

DVD

MOVIE REVIEW

Cupid

AKA: Cupid, Inc

Network: Hallmark Channel

Original Air Date: February 11, 2012

CAST:

Joely Fisher ... Eve Lovett
Jamie Kennedy ... Vernon Gart
Roark Critchlow ... Rick
Rebecca McFarland ... Nancy

PLOT:

Cupid is the story of Eve Lovett a talk show host who is given a matchmaking assignment by none other than Cupid himself. Find three couples and make them fall in love before Valentine's Day and Eve will be rewarded by finding the love of a lifetime.

With Valentine's Day approaching, Eve Lovett (Fisher), a workaholic TV talk show host with a string of failed relationships, is worried she will never find true love. But when a mysterious stranger named Vernon Gart (Kennedy) shows up on the set claiming to work for Cupid, Incorporated, Eve has no idea her love life is about to get an arrow right through the heart. To help boost the show's low ratings, Rick (Critchlow), Eve's handsome producer books Vernon as a love expert to do a segment called "Eve's Week of Love." She reluctantly agrees and with cameras rolling, Eve is soon taken off guard when Vernon starts describing all her failed relationships. Eve storms off the set, thinking Rick is pulling a joke on her, but she soon realizes Vernon knows much more about her than she has ever told anyone, even her best friend Nancy (McFarland). Recognizing Vernon may be legitimate, Eve takes Vernon up on his very unusual offer - if she can help one couple fall in love before Valentine's Day, her own true love will be revealed to her. Eve begins enthusiastically setting up couples on her crew, but through a series of matchmaking mishaps, her deadline is soon up. Will cupid's arrow hit his mark or is Eve destined to be alone forever?

Movie Review:

The movie begins with Eve Lovett, a daytime talk show host, having her palm read by a Psychic on her TV show. A a Christian, I personally don't believe in this, so I fastforwarded this part - so I cannot tell you exactly what she predicted, however I gleaned from a conversation that Eve had with her best friend later on, that the prediction was that she would be alone for the rest of her life. From the look on Eve's face - she seemed very uncomfortable with the Psychic and when they released hands, I couldn't help myself from thinking of "It's a Wonderful Life" and the scene where George Bailey looks at his hand, after shaking Mr. Potters hand - as if he had just nearly made a deal with the devil. Ewww... it gives me chills.

Anyway... from there, we learn more about Eve and we begin to feel sorry for this woman, who is single and very much alone. She is even more afraid now of being alone forever, although she has been very good in years past at shutting others out of her life... Until from Cupid, Inc... an actual man, who calls himself Cupid, appears to her in her office. Cupid is dressed in a red suit and tells her that he is there to help her try to find true love. All she has to do is help one couple fall in love before Valentine's Day - and then her one true love will be revealed.

Faced with a life filled with loneliness, if she fails, Eve throws herself haphazardly into the role of Matchmaker... even breaking up one couple along the way. It's cute and zany, at times... with a little reality mixed with fantasy.

SPOILER:
Does she ever find her one true love? Well... of course - the movie is called Cupid, after all. However, it's quite a trip for Eve getting there with Cupid popping in and out of her life. Of course noone else can see him, but her. Eventually Eve finds just the right guy (nearly almost as the credits roll) and realizes that the perfect couple was right in front of her all along. Eve asks Rick, the show producer, to "be her Valentine." They both agree that the sentiment is corny, cheesy, and old-fashioned, yet... that is why people love it so much.
END OF SPOILER

This movie overall, had some cute and strange moments. For me, it just didn't have the depth of character and emotion that I have grown to enjoy and love in most Hallmark Movies.

It's just a simple, yet silly, Valentine Romantic Comedy.

See or Skip:

See, if you enjoy lighthearted, extremely cheesy romance movies.
