Buoyed by the ratings record-breaking holiday episode “When Calls the Heart: The Greatest Christmas Blessing,” Hallmark Channel’s sweeping frontier drama “When Calls the Heart” returns for Season Six Sunday, February 24 (8pm ET/PT, 7C) with new episodes every Sunday night through April. “When Calls the Heart” is the most watched and longest running Hallmark Channel series to date.
Based on the book of the same name by Janette Oke, the series stars Erin Krakow (“Army Wives”) Lori Loughlin (“Fuller House,”90210”), Jack Wagner (“The Bold and the Beautiful,” “Melrose Place”), Pascale Hutton (“Sanctuary”), Kavan Smith (“Supernatural”), Paul Greene (“Bitten”) and Martin Cummins (“Riverdale”). Chris McNally (“Altered Carbon”) and Kevin McGarry (“Heartland”) join the cast for the new season.
In season six of “When Calls the Heart,” the town of Hope Valley adjusts to the changing times – while still maintaining the small-town bonds that connect them. Single mother Elizabeth (Krakow) leans on her friends for support as she balances motherhood with work. Romantic possibilities arise as Faith (Andrea Brooks) and Carson (Greene) assess their feelings, Jesse (Aren Buchholz) and Clara (Eva Bourne) take steps in securing their bond, and Abigail (Loughlin) confronts a visitor from her past. Lee (Smith) and Rosemary (Hutton) deal with an emotional issue that challenges their relationship. As for the rest of the town, Bill (Wagner) considers an opportunity that cements his place as Hope Valley’s ultimate authority and Henry Gowen (Cummins) reclaims his position among Hope Valley’s society. The community gains two new members when new Mountie Nathan Grant (Kevin McGarry) and secretive gambler Lucas Bouchard (Chris McNally) arrive on the scene. Finally, Elizabeth will continue to teach the children of Hope Valley – and although there may be potential suitors interested in her, the only relationship she is focused on is the one with her baby.
My thoughts on ‘WHEN CALLS THE HEART’ Season 6:
I am delighted to see that hope has once again returned to Hope Valley in this new season. The town seems to be turning the page to a brighter future filled with all sorts of new possibilities! There may be a few obstacles and struggles, but if we have learned anything from past seasons, it is this: they will surely come together as a community of friends and triumph over any thing that stands in their way.
If you've been following my site for awhile, then you probably know my feelings on the end of Season 5. I felt the best solution would have been to replace Jack's character, and I will always feel that way. Unfortunately, that's not the decision the Producers made, and as a consequence, there were many hurt Hearties at the end of last season. Will those who initially loved the series in the beginning return now? I don't know. I do know I have personally decided to watch again, mainly because... as a little girl I was given a Janette Oke book (Love Comes Softly) to read and those stories and characters continue to touch my heart today. The "When Calls the Heart" television series is based upon Janette Oke's series of books, and I'm hopeful there will be many stories to come that will again warm our hearts in all new ways.
One more thing! It is also nice to see Hallmark has changed the "When Calls the Heart" air time this season to an earlier time slot - 8pm/7c. I always thought that would be better for family viewing. Hopefully, this means more families will be able to watch this all new season together!
Net, When you say replace Jack, do you mean recast Dan? Because in defense of the producers, that is a hard thing to do. Sure shows have done it in the past, but the poor guy would have always been compared to Dan ("He's good, but he's not Dan, etc.").
ReplyDeleteSpeaking for myself, though I may feel differently when I actually watch, but I am tentatively optimistic that a fresh start will be good. I'm glad we'll get to see soon.
Yes, I personally would've preferred a replacement actor for the role of Jack. Of course, it would've taken some getting used to, but many shows have done it before. Sometimes successfully, sometimes not. Anyway, I, too, am looking upon this new season in a positive light, optimistic there will be heartwarming stories ahead for the characters in Hope Valley we all love.
DeleteThank you for sharing your thoughts. Blessings, Net
I wasn't happy with the way S5 ended either, but like you, Net, I'm ready to move on to happier storylines.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you agree, Anna... and you're looking forward to this new season, as well!
DeleteI would have preferred a re-cast, too. But, regardless, I will be watching Season 6. As the mother of a professional stage actress, I am a pretty good judge of actors and acting. And we are blessed to be able to watch an actor of the caliber of Erin Krakow on our TV sets week after week. For me, she is reason enough to watch WCTH. Add in the other excellent actors, the great production values, (mostly) uplifting stories and those adorable children, and for me it's must see tv.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Leigh, for sharing your thoughts on "When Calls the Heart." The common thread for nearly every episode of this program, was the fact that families could watch together. You are so right, WCTH is, indeed, an excellent production with an enormous amount of great acting talent, including those sweet children. I, too, adore them! A show like this is a rarity, and we absolutely should treasure it while we can. I agree with you, Leigh, it is still must see TV!
