May you enjoy this Christmas weekend, everyone – and many new and old Christmas movies!
My family and I will be visiting Santa on Saturday... I always can’t wait to see the children on Santa’s lap! Oh, what a fun, precious time it is each year! I’m so glad Jolly Ole St. Nick could take a little time off from the North Pole to visit our area for a bit before Christmas!!!
I can hardly believe there are only 2 weekends left before Christmas now! Gotta pack in lots more activities… just a little more shopping, more baking, and lots of wrapping!!!
I hope to squeeze in a few new Christmas movies, too – and record the rest! Must see, for me – is Angel Falls: A Novel Holiday, Christmas in Montana, Snowbound for Christmas, and Holiday Date! Happy Christmas Movie watching!!!
Maybe that’s why any diversion from the usual — say, sprinkling some Hanukkah into the mix — seems to bring such disastrous results.
ReplyDeleteHallmark, under increased scrutiny for its noticeable lack of diverse stars, is somewhat widening its offerings this season beyond all-Christmas, all-the-time: “Holiday Date” (premiering Saturday) and “Double Holiday” (due Dec. 21) each have their very own Nice Jewish Lead for the Not Jewish Other Lead to fall in love with. Lifetime, too, joined in this month with “Mistletoe & Menorahs.”
But these aren’t exactly Hanukkah movies — not entirely, anyway. In the Hallmark-Lifetime Cinematic Universe, Hanukkah and the characters who celebrate it exist only in relation to Christmas. The Jewish holiday serves as more of a plot point than a charming, wintry aesthetic.
Take Christy, the shiksa protagonist of “Mistletoe & Menorahs,” who in eight days — naturally — must become a Hanukkah expert to impress a Jewish prospective client and land an account. (That’s part of the formula, too: There’s usually some sort of account that needs landing.) Learning new traditions from her very cute, very Jewish counterpart is just another box to check so Christy can reach her goals and find love.
Due to their programming choices this year, I definitely will not be watching any of the offerings on Lifetime. It's unfortunate because I had quite a few of the new Lifetime Christmas movies on my DVR ready to be watched and I decided to delete them all without watching them.
ReplyDeleteIn our house, gathering around the TV to watch Christmas movies is a family affair. It's fortunate that we didn't see the Zola commercial featuring a lesbian kiss that aired recently on the Hallmark channel but I am very glad that Hallmark listened to their viewers, and decided not to re-air that commercial thus ending their partnership with Zola. Well done, Hallmark! Thank you!
Hello Susan! I know just how you feel. This years offerings from Lifetime have been a big disappointment to me and my family, as well. A few of them have been okay, but it's hard to know which ones we can trust any more.
DeleteI wouldn't have been as surprised if Lifetime had done this sort of programming the rest of the year, but to do this at Christmastime, is an even bigger slap in the face to those of us of faith who celebrate Christmas as a Holy season.
I think we are going to do have to be on guard from now on, on all channels that we watch. I, too, was glad to see Hallmark remove that Zola commercial, but I know they are feeling pressure from all sides on this. It's going to be a fierce battle for our religious and moral values.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and heart here with us!
God's Blessings & Merry Christmas to You and Your Family!!! Net
Apparently, I spoke too soon...
DeleteThe Hallmark Channel is apologizing and reversing course after it had pulled four commercials for the wedding planning website Zola that featured a same-sex couple kissing during their marriage ceremony, saying Sunday night that it hopes to reinstate the ads.
Hallmark CEO Mike Perry said in a statement:
“Earlier this week, a decision was made at Crown Media Family Networks to remove commercials featuring a same-sex couple. The Crown Media team has been agonizing over this decision as we’ve seen the hurt it has unintentionally caused. Said simply, they believe this was the wrong decision. Our mission is rooted in helping all people connect, celebrate traditions, and be inspired to capture meaningful moments in their lives. Anything that detracts for this purpose is not who we are. As the CEO of Hallmark, I am sorry for the hurt and disappointment this has caused.
Hallmark is, and always has been, committed to diversity and inclusion – both in our workplace as well as the products and experiences we create. It is never Hallmark’s intention to be divisive or generate controversy. We are an inclusive company and have a track record to prove it. We have LGBTQ greeting cards and feature LGBTQ couples in commercials. We have been recognized as one of the Human Rights Campaigns Best Places to Work, and as one of Forbes America’s Best Employers for Diversity. We have been a progressive pioneer on television for decades – telling wide ranging stories that elevate the human spirit such as August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson and Colm TΓ³ibΓn’s The Blackwater Lightship, both of which highlight the importance of tolerance and understanding.
Hallmark will be working with GLAAD to better represent the LGBTQ community across our portfolio of brands. The Hallmark Channel will be reaching out to Zola to reestablish our partnership and reinstate the commercials.
Across our brand, we will continue to look for ways to be more inclusive and celebrate our differences.”
Ugh. It's getting harder and harder to navigate these waters!
DeleteI've started taping everything on the dvr so that way I can fast forward through all the commercials and hit delete when necessary. But I'm sorely tempted to just delete ALL the Christmas movies on principle and go back to reading good books!
Here's hoping the BYU or Inspirational channels will see that there's a market for sweet, family-friendly, romance movies and will step up their game so that Christian and faith-based viewers will have another place to tune in!! I'd actually pay more just to have a special channel like that.
Thank you to Net and other viewers who post comments on here to help the rest of us with our viewing decisions. It's similar to reading book reviews by all my Christian friends on GoodReads.
~~Jane
This decision is unfortunate. But if we look, Hallmark has already appeared with a gay couple in a movie. In "Road to Christmas", one of Julia Wise's son, David, was dating another man and owns a shop with his boyfriend / partner. It was explicit, but no one talked about being in a Christmas movie... and now... this... so sad...
DeleteJane, I agree wholeheartedly with your post. Personally, I am truly saddened by Hallmark's decision to reinstate the same sex commercial. This can only mean future shows and movies pushing this agenda down our throats, as well.
DeleteIn the future, I will no longer support any of Hallmark's products, including ornaments, greeting cards or movies. I will stick to the old tried and true family Hallmark movies on my dvr, such as "The Christmas Card" and "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year". I'm also going to start focusing more on old black and white movies on TMC. I, too, have also found myself longing for the old days where I did more reading.
The world wants us to conform to what they try and force us to believe is "normal", but the Bible says "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil". I will not allow The Hallmark channel to tell me that what my God says is a sin, is now "normal" and accepted. What a sad time we live in.
Susan, Jane, Rosana, and Lisa...
DeleteThank you all for sharing your view on this situation. I'm grateful to know you all are standing on your moral and religious principles, in spite of what the world says.
It is a sad time, as you said, Lisa, but I'm so glad we are able to band together through this. I pray there will still be good programing on TV for our families to watch, but I do feel like some of the pure innocent joy of them has been taken from us.
I'm grateful for all of your support and feedback here. It truly means so much to me!
God bless you & yours! Merry Christmas! Net

Net I agree with your blog 100%. It's too bad that Hallmark has chosen to bend their knee to this organization. I don't think they are the ones who have supported Hallmark all these years. Yes there has been the occasional movie that had this lifestyle in it but we were able to change the channel. And for the most part Hallmark has been a safe place for family viewing, Until now. I am very disappointed for their decision as I think they may have alienated a large portion on their viewers. Hallmark has been one of the few channels we watch regularly. We don't watch the main networks except for an occasional sports program. Haven't decided whether to not watch Hallmark at all or what. Maybe if we had enough of us boycott Hallmark they would see who their viewing public is. Not sure enough people would take that stand. Hallmark chose to bow to the wrong God. RG
ReplyDeleteHallmark Ceo has apologized to the LGBTQ community for the hurt they have caused them. What about all the faithful viewers who have watched for years? I guess our feelings don't matter. I still think if enough of us boycotted Hallmark they would see who their viewing audience is. RG
