Busy weekend! Really looking forward to the Hallmark Hall of Fame entrant. Also, don't know where else to put this, but stumbled across this channel, Get TV, which like Me TV is a broadcast sub channel in lots of markets and offered on many cable systems, that is broadcasting classic Christmas Variety shows every Wednesday night. Really rare stuff like the Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Judy Garland and Dean Martin shows. Pretty cool, and thought others might want to check it out, too. They’re doing a marathon Christmas Eve!

Thanks for the info about the getTV.

I plan to watch 'Flight Before Christmas' tonight.

Whoa, feeling DVR overload again this weekend!
ReplyDeleteNow I wish I had DVR. I usually don't.

10 new movies makes it impossible for everyone to see them all, but then the networks don't really care -they are just constantly competing for viewership. Real Christmas spirit there. Hate to decide between them, but they leave me with no choice. It's Hallmark Channel for us! Thanks Net for another great Christmas Movie weekend reminder.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone understand why Hallmark premieres movies on the Hallmark Channel and the Hallmark Movie Channel at the same time?
ReplyDeleteI don't know why either.
DeleteMisty
My Christmas Wish... I wish I could see them all, but I'm definitely watching Karen Kingsbury's The Bridge on Sunday night!
ReplyDeleteSo many movies this weekend but Hallmark's movies have been down right boring this year. Too vanilla and cookie cutter. I'll be watching Royal Family Christmas and How Sarah Got her Wings.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more about how uninteresting Hallmark's movies are this year! I'm so disappointed! Out of all the Christmas movies they've aired thus far, I've only liked TWO! I liked "'Tis The Season For Love," and "A Crown For Christmas" was okay---not great, but watchable. All of the other ones shown, I've either passed after the first 10-15 minutes of watching and changed the channel completely, or kept it on the channel, though not paying full attention because of my lack of interest. The last two movies that aired--"Angel of Christmas" and "Just In Time For Christmas"--I didn't even watch yet (although I want to and will) because I chose "Christmas In The Smokies" and "The Flight Before Christmas" as my top priorities over the Hallmark movies! And I enjoyed BOTH of those! Hallmark needs to get it together! I totally appreciate they invest in Christmas movies as much as they do, but when the quality sucks, what's the point?!?! Ugh!! Other networks are giving them competition that's nothing to sneeze at, that's for sure.
DeleteUnfortunately, I think the problem is one of success. During November and December, Hallmark is one of the highest rated networks not only on the weekends but also during the week. They make a huge jump in the ratings in these two months compared to the rest of the year when they air non-stop Golden Girls and Frasier re-runs. So during the two Christmas months, they have to inundate their audience with new material to keep them tuned in. Of course with 17 new movies, you're going to get some clunkers. I don't mind the repetitious plots. Has there really been many Hallmark movies that you didn't know exactly how they would end within the first five minutes? Girl is either engaged to someone she doesn't love but thinks is a good match for her. Girl is a single mom who lost her military husband. Girl is a workaholic who has never had time for a relationship. She meets a guy that she can't stand and they rub each other the wrong way. You know there's literally a zero-percent chance that they won't end up together in the end but you watch anyway. I guess it's the same reason people re-watch the same Christmas movies or listen to the same Christmas music every year. In a world of unknowns and constant change, at this time of year it can be comforting to relax with the known despite the obvious repetition.
DeleteA couple thoughts:
ReplyDeleteWhile some of the "premieres" or first showings compete, most of the movies will be shown multiple times, so it's not like you totally miss out by having to "choose" on premiere night.
Also, lot of people complain about the repetition in storylines, but this is just part of the entertainment business and has been since film began. When going to the movies was the equivalent of watching TV for the night, studios would recycle plots all the time. Example - "the thief falls in love with his mark" is the plot of literally dozens and dozens of movies throughout the 1920's, 1930's, and 1940's. If you've had enough of that particular storyline, you just don't tune in. But, in general, studios have success with that strategy, today as well as in the past.
I generally don't care about storyline repetition - I think that it's quite common to have stories we like being told and retold and I am fine with that, but I do have to agree that so far this year I found myself wanting to rewatch a lot less movies than I normally would want to out of the holiday selection.
ReplyDeleteSo far my real disappointment has been the Hallmark Hall of Fame one from yesterday, Just in Time for Christmas, which I actively really disliked, a rarity for me with Hallmark Christmas movies. But I really disliked the characters, their interactions, dynamics and didn't really buy into pretty much anything, most of all the main romance of the film. There are a few more movies I am looking forward to and I am yet to watch Sunday's films, then I can do some sort of summary of this holiday season. There have been so many movies across all the channels I will need to do some proper ranking to sort out my thoughts.
From Saturday, I mainly enjoyed The Flight before Christmas - it was great seeing Mayim Bialik, she's a different sort of actress to what I'm used to in this type of movie so it has been fun, and it actually got a lot out of Ryan McPartlin, who is often hit and miss with me.
I agree with your assessment of Just In Time for Christmas. I didn't hate it but it was just lacking something. Luckily, Christopher Lloyd was amazing in literally every scene he was in. A joy to watch. I like Eloise Mumford a great deal and think she's a wonderful actress but they made her too dim and ditsy for my taste. She just didn't come off not only as someone with a PHD in Psychology but also a professor with tenure at an Ivy League School? Not even close to believable. All in all, worth watching once but nothing I will ever re-watch.
DeleteShae, that's my thing, too!---I don't care if storylines are repeated...that's to be expected. I mean, I absolutely love the typical story of the two leads starting off hating each other, but ending up falling in love. What I don't like is when the storylines/plots aren't written well, move slow and are boring!!
DeleteWith that said....I really, really liked The Flight Before Christmas! It's been my favorite 2016 Christmas movie so far out of all the ones shown across all the networks. I thought it was really cute and funny. Not just parts here and there, but the whole way through. Mayim did a great job, and her comedic timing is quite good! At times, she took me back to her Blossom days. Lol. And I didn't know much about the lead male actor, Ryan McPartlin, but I like him. He's tall, hot, and played his part well!
Does anyone know if The Bridge is playing again this year? I don't see any more showings and my mom's DVR stopped working when it was recording.
ReplyDeleteI also want to say that while many story lines are similar, I am very much enjoying all of these Christmas movies! Angel of Christmas was my favorite so far. The acting was really good, they had good chemistry and the story was a little different.
I absolutely can Natalie! Hallmark is actually moving the movie to their other network Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. Hopefully you have that station! The best place to look for air times is on Hallmark's website, here:
Deletehttp://www.hallmarkmoviesandmysteries.com/karen-kingsburys-the-bridge.
Just click on View All Showtimes (on the right).
Here are the next 4 showings:
(in eastern standard time)
Saturday December 12 9:00 PM
Sunday December 13 11:00 AM
Tuesday December 15 6:00 PM
Tuesday December 15 7:00 PM
There are more on the site!
Plus, unless they change the schedule - it is listed, as of now, to air on the regular Hallmark Channel on Christmas Day at 1:30am.
Hope that helps you & your Momma! Glad you are enjoying all the Christmas movies, Natalie! Thank you for sharing your favorite! I haven't caught "Angel of Christmas", yet, but it looks very sweet.
God's Blessings!!! Net :)
You are so dang sweet, Net!! Thank you so much for these show times! I actually checked out the website and somehow missed that big button that said "Showtimes" haha! I don't have the HMM channel yet, although I wish so badly I did!! (I have a weird electromagnetic sensitivity and can't use the DirecTV HD box. :( ) Maybe someday! Thanks again!!
DeleteThank you for sharing that, Natalie. I had no idea such a small machine created so much electromagnetic activity- but then again radios, cell phones, TVs, and all electronics do the same! Yikes! It seems they are everywhere and I'm so sorry to hear how it effects you. I will pray for you... and, please know I'm so appreciative you shared that - because I think it's probably best if we all limit exposure, as much as possible.

How have the movies on Lifetime been this year? In our home, we usually stick with the Hallmark movies as they tend to be more wholesome in general. But from the description of a lot of the movies on Lifetime, they sound like they're much more "family-friendly" than they have been in years past. Perhaps they're trying to copy Hallmark's winning formula? We don't get the UP Network but we do get ION. We've tried a couple but they seem to have the same failings that they've always had - they're just not that good which is a shame because ION really makes an effort to make a lot of Christmas movies.
ReplyDeleteWell, I haven't personally seen all the Lifetime ones, yet- but I do hear most are more family friendly than your typical Lifetime movie. For instance : "A Gift Wrapped Christmas" (which I loved by the way!!!) is very family friendly! I haven't viewed it, yet, but I think "Last Chance Christmas" looks family oriented, as well.
DeleteThank you for the Question... Merry Christmas!!!
Lifetime actually has a pretty decent collection of Christmas movies -- not just the new ones from this year, but from previous years as well. And some of the movies have substance and meaning to them. Many of them could very easily fit right in on both Hallmark Channels (Lifetime's beautiful "Christmas Angel" movie with Bruce Davison would be perfect for Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, and "Twelve Trees of Christmas" would fit in well on the regular Hallmark Channel), or possibly even on ION or UP.
DeleteA week or two ago I was saying (in a Facebook Hallmark fan group that some of us belong to) that Lifetime is funny in that its holiday content has a totally different tone than what its other content has for the rest of the year. It's not consistent.
For example, all year long, Lifetime features movies about stalkers, murderers, extramarital affairs, teenagers getting into bad situations and other lurid/dark scenarios. But then, when it comes time for the holiday season to begin, suddenly Lifetime is showing "Turkey Hollow" and "Christmas in the City," or other cheery installments. Its holiday content seems to be totally out of context with what Lifetime offers for the rest of the year, whereas Hallmark's Christmas (and Thanksgiving) movies are very consistent with the movies that air during the rest of the year. It's as if Lifetime becomes a different channel in November-December!
Anon, I recommend Lifetime's The Flight Before Christmas! I really liked it. Everyone has their own opinion of what's wholesome and what's not, so I won't provide you with an opinion on that. There was no sex, guns or violence, if that helps you at all. Lol.
DeleteI tried "How Sarah Got Her Wings" and hated it, because the acting was horrible and I didn't like the characters. The "Flight Before Christmas" was ok, I was hoping to like it more. I didn't find the couple to have any chemistry and the story was a bit boring.
ReplyDeleteSo far, Hallmark's movies have far surpassed the other cable networks for me. I did miss "A Prince For Christmas". It is funny how almost every movie on Hallmark had them ice skating. LOL
I've enjoyed all the Hallmark ones more this year than last years.
Misty
I’ve noticed the ice skating trend too, Misty. Another trend I’ve noticed is having characters going to Christmas tree lots. There are several movies that have at least one scene at a Christmas tree lot, such as "Angel of Christmas," "‘Tis the Season for Love," and "Murder She Baked: A Plum Pudding Mystery."
DeleteYes, it seems as though those are definitely repeated scenes this Christmas! I also noticed that, Misty & Anonymous!
DeleteAlso... Thank you Misty for your movie reviews! I am still catching up on a few of the movies you mentioned... but it's wonderful to have the problem of so many Christmas Moves! I love watching them after Christmas, too!!! :)
Blessings & Merry Christmas!!! Net
