This portion of an article that refers to Ralph Waite, John from The Waltons, truly touched me:

“Letters to God” shows the truth about the real-life Tyler, who lost his battle with cancer. Kim Dawson (producer) said Tyler “did the Lord’s work” and even on the set his example changed lives. Ralph Waite, who portrayed a neighbor helping Tyler cope and who played the father in “The Waltons” TV show, “broke down” during filming, Dawson said. Waite lost a 9-year-old daughter 50 years ago.

“He blamed God for her loss,” Dawson said.

Waite, 81, a Yale Divinity School graduate, went back to church for the first time in all those years because of his experience making “Letters to God,” the producer said.

A heartfelt tale of inspiration, hope and redemption, “Letters to God” is the story of what happens when one boy’s walk of faith crosses paths with one man’s search for meaning—the resulting transformational journey touches the lives of everyone around them.

Tyler Doherty (TANNER MAGUIRE) is an extraordinary eight-year-old boy. Surrounded by a loving family and community, and armed with the courage of his faith, he faces his daily battle against cancer with bravery and grace. To Tyler, God is a friend, a teacher and the ultimate pen pal—Tyler’s prayers take the form of letters, which he composes and mails on a daily basis.

The letters find their way into the hands of Brady McDaniels (JEFFREY S.S. JOHNSON), a beleaguered postman standing at a crossroads in his life. At first, he is confused and conflicted over what to do with the letters. But the decision he ultimately makes becomes a testament to the quiet power of one boy’s shining spirit and unshakeable faith.

Inspired by a true story, “Letters to God” is an intimate, moving and often funny story about the galvanizing effect one child’s belief can have on his family, friends and community.

  1. Great story, big applause for Art D'Alessandro (story writer), Letters to God was the best movie I have watch in years specially for Family and drama genre. The actors were believable and the story line is right on. There are so many like the child and family depicted in this movie that are struggling with trusting God when life seems hopeless. This movie gives hope to viewer that not only is God involved and interested in our lives but he is actively involved in every aspect of our lives. Even when we face the end of this life He is there offering us help and hope. My biggest puzzle about this movie is where was the publicity for it?
