April is there for damage control after Harrington's recent comments on social media have ruffled some feathers. My Weekend Christmas Movie Picks...
As I look back over the list of NEW Christmas movies above, I think there may be some fun, lighthearted, new Christmas movie options this weekend, minus the HMM movie, which has a somewhat mysterious air about it.
Both the new Great American Family movies look potentially good. My that Christopher Russell has been busy promoting his Christmas movies this holiday season, with 2 on GAF and another coming up next week on the Hallmark Channel! I'm hoping his Christmas movie premiering this Sunday night on Great American Family, Peppermint & Postcards, is just as cute as the title!
I'm also curious about UPtv's Christmas at the Amish Bakery and how accurately they will portray the Amish community. The story seems familiar with saving the family business and all, but I'm hoping it will also be heartwarming.
Plus, I don't know how many of the classics I'll squeeze into my schedule this weekend, due to plans with my family, but I'm always delighted to see movies like It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, Home Alone, The Santa Clause, It Happened on 5th Avenue, etc... and I'm hoping to catch some of those, here and there!

I try to watch some of the new movies when I can, but mainly I prefer to see the older movies like It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street. All of the new rom-coms are the same-o same-o.

DeleteMy all-time favorite actor as well!! Everybody knows about It's a Wonderful Life for the Christmas season, but there is also The Shop Around the Corner, and for a later one with him, it is worth watching the touching half-hour special Mr. Krueger's Christmas.

Mark 25, Thank you for mentioning Mr. Krueger's Christmas; I keep meaning to rewatch that short. It's been years since I've seen it, but I recall how touching it is. I believe I first saw it either on the Odyssey Channel (before it became Hallmark) or the Hallmark Channel in it's early years. Do you happen to remember this?

Abigail, Those are wonderful movie suggestions, too. I've always loved "The Man Who Knew Too Much" with Jimmy and Doris Day and "Rear Window" is another favorite of mine with Jimmy and Grace Kelly.

I always enjoy “You Can’t Take It With You”. Jean Arthur is such an hilarious actress. One of my faves, if not my favorite! I also like his historic ones like “The Spirit of St Louis” and “Strategic Air Command”. He gets to play his comfortable pilot roles in those. “The Stratton Story” with June Allyson is pretty good as well. (He plays with June in SAC too.)

Net, I don't remember on what network I first saw Mr. Krueger's Christmas, but I think it was back in the mid-late '80's. I was able to buy it on dvd some years ago.

I’ll wait on some reviews from the others to see if they are any good. Peppermint and Postcards sounds so cute but I am kind of over Christopher Russell, I see him in so many movies throughout the year and I feel like he has no depth or change in his acting….like it all seems the same to me. Jane, see if your local library provides Hoopla. There are different tiers of Hoopla service, I think, but one includes the option to digitally "checkout" a 7-day Bingepass Hallmark Movies Now subscription. I was so excited to find this was the case for my multi-county library system!

Florence, Journey to Christmas was a really sweet movie. Refreshing. I liked it a good bit when I first watched it but, as I watch and eliminate more and more mediocre movies from the dvr, this one is actually moving up even higher in my esteem. I can understand why you've re-watched it! ~~Jane

Watched some of Peppermint and Postcards on pureflix. It seemed interesting enough, but I had a really hard time looking past the "blended family" dynamic. I totally realize that marriages sometimes end in divorce and is permitted in the Bible in certain circumstances, so I don't have any problem watching a movie where a passing comment is made about that. But this one just felt so very awkward! The mom and her daughter are always hanging out with her ex husband and his new fiance! Like the fiance spends time with her and gives her advice, and while they all seem to get along, it just felt very strange to me. It would have been better if the ex husband was in the role of brother, instead. Then it would feel more natural for them to be hanging out at her house, and it wouldn't change the plot.

Totally agree with your review of Peppermint and Postcards. It was so weird that the fiance was giving advice to his ex wife. I could not make it to the end of the movie. I think sometimes these movies try so hard to be different it just doesn't work. This will be the 1st movie I can't put a check mark on the GAC checklist.
DeleteKaitlyn and Ken, I am totally in agreement with you on this movie. The relationships among the four adults and the child were really, really awkward. Also, Ella Cannon's character was not convincing to me - maybe it was the way the script was written, or her acting, but she just didn't seem sincere from what I saw. I turned it off after about a half-hour.

ReplyDeleteHas a very prominent same sex/lesbian couple (the sister). Not just implied, but shown really clearly. I stopped watching after 10 minutes. Unfortunate because it was quite enjoyable and quirky at first, had so much potential :(

It was pretty sweet and I enjoyed watching it. Like others, I'm not a big fan of the flamboyant supervisor. I think it wasn't realistic that he was encouraging Peggy like that.

I'm honestly not sure about this. I think generally it was sweet. There are some parts I liked, and some were alright. Maybe I am a bit picky because I watched a lot of great ones lately. The writing was good. Kimberley Sustad was INCREDIBLE as always. I truly love her acting and how she portrays her characters on screen. I enjoyed her relationship with the people around her, especially her best friend. The male lead, I am not sure. I think he was okay, but I couldn't help but feel something was missing. I don't know... the chemistry was a bit off for me. But I can see that it would be a keeper for many and that others would enjoy this a lot. For me, it's a one time watch.

Agreed with what has been said. I think it would be so much more powerful if the final choir performance had shown other Christmas songs as well, not just the "Time for me to come home" song. I think this was quite touching and lovely overall. Nothing extra special, but it was enjoyable throughout.
CHRISTMAS ISLAND
I watched this a while ago and forgot to review. I usually always like Andrew Walker's movie, but this one was not one I'd watch again. To be fair, he was wonderful here as always, but I just don't think the chemistry with Rachel was there.
NORWEGIAN HOLIDAY *clean*
ReplyDeleteAs others have mentioned, I didn't buy the storyline in the beginning. I don't think it was believable that JJ would just agree to go with a stranger she had just known. Not trying to "play writer" here, but it would be more believable if they had known each other before at some kind of capacity. It was overall a beautiful movie though, especially towards the end. Quite a deeper drama I think, I would think this was for HMM. Pretty touching in the end.

ReplyDeleteMeet Me Under the Mistletoe: I quite enjoyed this movie and thought it was a sweet story. Sarah and Simon portrayed their characters (Eva and Jeff) perfectly and the rest of the cast was really good, and they all went well together well as far as cast chemistry goes. I thought the writers did a really good job of developing Eva and Jeff's relationship which ended with mutual respect, admiration, and love for each other. They made a great team! I loved seeing Paul Essiembre and Jan Skene in the cast and the young woman who portrayed Eva's (Sarah's character) niece was adorable with all her science talk. IMO, cute movie! ~ Debbie
ReplyDeletePeppermints and Postcards: I really wanted to like this one, but it just didn't hold my attention. Christopher seemed kind of awkward as a TV reporter, Ella was fine, but the acting of the supporting cast lacked in comparison to some others so far this Christmas movie season. While I'm glad to see blended families represented in a good way, it just seemed a tab bit unrealistic to me. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't really good either. Just a middle of the road movie for me. ~ Debbie

Review: Magic in Mistletoe -
ReplyDeleteFamily-friendly? Somewhat surprisingly, yes -
Keeper? Also surprisingly, although borderline, yes -
I did not have high hopes for this one given that Paul Campbell was involved, and the plot didn't seem all that interesting to me. But this is a very clean and enjoyable movie, primarily because of the wonderful acting by Lyndie Greenwood. While Paul is very good, Lyndie is outstanding, showing all of the necessary emotions at the right time, and the growing chemistry between the two actors was fun to watch. The storyline was okay - as expected, it didn't wow me - but because of the acting, I will be keeping this one, at least for awhile.

ReplyDeleteGAF’s “Peppermint and Postcards” is a family-friendly story featuring Ella Cannon and Christopher Russell. Their chemistry is wonderful and I found it was interesting to see Russell’s character in a more vulnerable and sensitive role. Another hit for GAF this season – bravo!

ReplyDeleteYes, Chef! Christmas was a really good movie. And I loved Alicia's (Tia Mowry) pink and white shirt that she wears at one point in the movie!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to update this. I noticed another review for this movie that said there was a man that mentioned his husband. It was a very small part and I did not notice it the first time I watch this. I decided to go back and look at that part, and she's correct. While the movie was otherwise enjoyable, I would not have promoted it as completely clean like I did.

DeleteI totally understand; it's not always easy to catch every line. It's the same issue in The Nine Kittens of Christmas or Christmas on Wheels. In both of those movies, there's also just a quick mention.

I wish I had come here first! I usually do check into everything on Hallmark before pushing play, but did not with Round and Round. I am not Jewish, but I highly anticipate Hallmark’s Hanukkah movie each year, and seeing that this one would have a time loop, I was doubly excited. Unfortunately, just 10-15 minutes in, I was unhappily surprised by the featured same sex couple, who it was obvious would be highlighted repeatedly throughout the time loop story. I can often overlook a LGB side character who we don’t have so featured, but I could tell this was going to be a repeated and heavy part. So sad, I had to turn it off.
