Yes, you can come home again! The water’s fine, so dive right in - to ‘Chesapeake Shores’!

There’s always something warm and familiar, when one returns home. If you are a frequent Hallmark movie watcher, then you will feel right at home, come on in, the door is open… with the new weekly television series ‘Chesapeake Shores’ which features well-known actors and actresses from previous Hallmark favorites, such as: Megan Ory (‘The Memory Book’, ‘Debbie Macomber’s Dashing Through the Snow’), Jesse Metcalfe (‘Fairfield Road’, ‘A Country Wedding’), Treat Williams (‘Safe Harbor’, Hallmark Hall of Fame Movies ‘Front of the Class’ and ‘Beyond the Blackboard’), Laci J Mailey (‘Notes from the Heart Healer’, ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered’), and Barbara Niven (‘Cedar Cove’, ‘Murder She Baked’, ‘A Christmas Detour’, and much more!).

Here’s some background on “Chesapeake Shores”…

Since Abby O'Brien Winters left Chesapeake Shores 10 years ago for success in the “big city”, her world has become business mergers, acquisitions, meetings, and late night deadlines, all with the goal of climbing the corporate ladder. However, when she receives a desperate call from her sister Jess pleading for her to return home, she pushes everything aside and heads to Chesapeake Shores. Once there, she quickly begins to see day to day life very differently. As a single mother, with two young daughters, Abby eventually eases back into life at the shore, amongst a once disconnected family, including: her father (Treat Williams), grandmother (Diane Ladd), sisters (Laci J Mailey & Emilie Ullerup) , mother (Barbara Niven). And, not to mention, there just happens to be the handsome Trace Riley (Jesse Metcalfe), her old sweetheart… the one she left behind!

There is so much stirring in Chesapeake Shores, especially in Abby’s heart. Her sister Jess has recently acquired an old inn she plans to restore and turn into her own B & B. Unfortunately, the old place is not in good condition, and appears to be falling apart, which may be the perfect analogy for the O’Brien family, who have been severed and broken, but seem to be trying to rebuild their family once again from the foundation up. Tensions and old past hurts still linger, but the O’Brien family still holds tight to each other and the town of Chesapeake Shores, where life may move a bit slower, but not necessarily easier.

The lives of the O’Brien family are certainly not drama free. After coming home, it’s evident that Abby is seeing life a whole lot clearer, as she begins to wonder where she and her daughters truly belong… New York? … or Chesapeake Shores? A health scare from her Grandmother Nell (Diane Ladd) adds to the drama, and gives Abby a reason to pause and reflect on the important things in life, including time spent with her young girls.

Seeing her busy, distracted career life through the eyes of her family, Abby fears she has already become her father, who was a workaholic when she and her siblings were growing up, which is why her mother left years ago.

Trace, Abby’s old flame, is somewhat distant at first upon her return, but soon enough he comes around and eases Abby out of her rigid routine, gets her to relax, and eventually enjoy life again. Where has he been these last 10 years? He was a singer, out on the road traveling, but his heart drew him back to Chesapeake Shores, where he has become a contractor. Perhaps he’s just the right guy to help Abby and her family, rebuild their lives.

Abby must decide, if she will dive back in to life in Chesapeake Shores, and help herself and her family sink or swim.

Surprises are in store… along with heartwarming moments, emotional homecomings, fireworks, and the lasting hope of reconciliation!

Please note: Hallmark Channel’s ‘Chesapeake Shores’ TV series is an adult drama based on the novels by Sherryl Woods, of the same name. This review is based solely on the 2 hour original pilot movie.

I would say ‘Chesapeake Shores’ is a combination of ‘A Country Wedding’ plus ‘Harvest Moon’, with a definite mix of ‘Cedar Cove.' With that in mind, if you enjoyed these previous Hallmark movies, or the series 'Cedar Cove,' then you should also like ‘Chesapeake Shores’. In my opinion, it is an adult type Television drama, definitely with a pace that is geared more toward grown-ups, so please keep that in mind.

Please share in the comments below your thoughts on ‘Chesapeake Shores’!

  19. Excellent review here. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this new series, but your review prepared me for these Hallmark shocker moments! Thanks Net! I'm not going to keep watching, however, if this sort of behavior continues or increases. Why do I always feel like everybody is always trying to test their limits to see how far they can go. Not needed. Stay true to yourself. That works. That's why people usually like you. This felt, at times, out of place for Hallmark. Definitely glad you warned me, so I didn't watch with my young daughter, who typically enjoys all the new Hallmark movies with Mommy. If I can't watch it with my daughter, then I'll be forced to skip it or record it.

  20. My wife and I watched Chesapeake Shores last night. She liked it a lot and is still talking about it today, picking out vacation spots. We will be watching the next ep.! Chris L.

  21. I liked what I saw last night, and I do like the fact that it is perhaps more adult, as it was very, very tame compared to the major networks.

That said, I was a fan of Cedar Cove, and I'm not sure about the writers, etc of that series, but I found CS to be better developed than CC. I thought the story lined flowed well and the character development was very good, also, considering it was a 2 hour movie. It made me want to watch more and to see where these people are going. And the fact that it is a multigenerational story is intriguing as well. The casting of Megan Ory and Jesse Metcalf is excellent, and I felt the chemistry with them, as well as with Treat Williams and Diane Ladd. Good job, Harllmark!!

  22. I love Jesse Metcalfe and I just didn`t want this movie to end. I will be watching faithfully.
