As Wes draws close to the family he has never known, he stays to help them defend their homestead.

Movie Review:

God.

Shadow on the Mesa has all the glory of a true American Frontier Western where men trusted in the almighty and justice was served the old fashioned way.

Guns.

It’s a story where right is right and wrong is definitely wrong- with no room for compromise in between.

Grit.

Wes Brown (June in January) portrays Wes Rawlins, who is on a mission to seek out his father, Ray Eastman (portrayed by Kevin Sorbo, Santa Suit, What If, Abel's Field, God's Not Dead, etc...)) after the passing of his mother.

Greed.

Once Wes finds his father, he must decide whether or not he can trust him, or his wife and grown children, to reveal his true identity. Before Wes can do that, however, trouble arises, as the Dowdy gang is seeking to destroy them and take over their land.

Ray's son Chuck joins Wes in this gun-battle to protect their ranch. By instinct, Wes becomes a protective son and older brother. It becomes clear that someone in the Eastman family has allowed greed to take over as they have been plotting with the Dowdy gang.

As the DVD tagline says, "Retribution comes with a bullet."

Grace.

Overall, it’s a powerful narrative of good always triumphing over evil and family standing up to defend one another.

See or Skip:

Please Note: this is a western! Therefore, expect gun-fights and blood-shed. That was a fact of life on our American frontier.

This was a true western, reminiscent of the old John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Clint Eastwood “cowboy movies”. If you are a fan of those, you will truly enjoy seeing Kevin Sorbo and Wes Brown in ‘Shadow on the Mesa’.

    2. Oh, I'm so glad to hear how much you enjoyed this movie. It is a true western in every sense of the word. It's been years since I've seen it, but I did have the opportunity to interview screenwriter Lee Martin back in 2014, who was quite helpful in giving insight to the movie. You can read our interview - here. I hope you enjoy it! Thank you for commenting! :)

  7. Hi, I'm Pam Stater. My husband and I love Lee's movie "Shadow on the Mesa". The story is terrific, as is the cast. This movie BEGS for a sequel to be written and a tv movie made! Please, Hallmark, give Lee the go-ahead to write it! We saw it on PIXL and are looking forward to joining everyone for Hallmark's premiere of this wonderful western on March 23rd.

  10. I have re-checked the Hallmark Movie Channel listings and according to the schedule on their site, "Shadow on the Mesa" is supposed to still air on March 23rd, 2013.

I personally do not have the Hallmark Movie Channel - so I have no way of checking listings on my TV. I will contact HMC and see if I can get an answer on this for all of you. Are you for certain checking the Hallmark Movie Channel and NOT the Hallmark Channel listings? Shadow on the Mesa should be listed to air at 8 PM & 10 PM.

  11. Just wanted to let you all know - Shadow on the Mesa will air Saturday night, March 23rd, 2013 on the Hallmark MOVIE Channel. I have seen lots of press for it: including ads online, commercials, Twitter promotions, and interviews with Wes Brown and Kevin Sorbo on the Hallmark Channel daytime talkshow: Home and Family, to promote the movie.

Hope this information is helpful to everyone who was looking for this new western movie.

  12. Shadow on the Mesa will air March 23, 2013, twice, and 5 times on March 24, 2013, and it will be repeated later on, but only on the Hallmark Movie Channel at this time. I don't believe there will be a DVD until the movie has run on TV for at least a year, but if it's really, popular, they might do it earlier. The actors gave their all to this movie, which makes me humble but proud. I can't say enough about Larry Levinson's great production and editing. God bless, Lee Martin

All of the cast members are perfect for their roles, the acting is well done. It's nice to see so many well known stars in it. Well done, Lee Martin and Hallmark. We need more westerns just like this I agree, would love to see a sequel here. Can't wait to see this on DVD!!

  36. Have just been told that SHADOW ON THE MESA will again show on HALLMARK MOVIE CHANNEL in July of 2013. (I pay $5 a month more to Direct TV for this channel, and they have been also making free offers for a period of time, as has Dish.)

  37. Hi, to all. After being told it would be July, Hallmark emailed me again, and she said she had decided not to wait that long. She will show SHADOW ON THE MESA April 29, 2013 on the Hallmark Movie Channel (not the regular Hallmark channel) at 9 PM ET, 6 PM PT. She moved it up because of the continuing interest, for which we are grateful. Best, Lee Martin

Please keep us updated on any more "Shadow on the Mesa" movie news (many are hoping for a Sequel!) and news on your novel, as well!

  39. Hi, you have a great system here. I'll try to paste in the Hallmark ratings press release (from the Internet):
    ----------------------------
    " HALLMARK PRESS RELEASE 3/25/13
Hallmark Movie Channel's 2013 ratings momentum continues, with the Saturday, March 23 premiere of SHADOW ON THE MESA garnering a 1.1 household rating with nearly 1.1 million unduplicated viewers. The fourth movie in the network's expanded slate of 10 original movies for 2013, "Shadow on the Mesa" replaces "Our Wild Hearts" as the 2nd highest rated and 2nd most watched original movie in network history among households and total viewers."
    ---------------------------------------
Viewers have all made this possible. God bless them. (I only know about the Hallmark Movie Channel.) Thanks for making this great site available. Best, Lee Martin

  43. Shadow on the Mesa looks good, but I don't have HMC. Any word if they will ever play this movie on the regular Hallmark Channel. I don't know why they can't play all of the original HMC movies on Hallmark, too, like a week later as they do the Hallmark Hall of Fame Movies, which are first on ABC, then on the Hallmark Channel the next week. It would make sense. Anyway, I hope they put this on on Hallmark Ch or release it on DVD. Enjoyed reading all the comments.

  44. Yeah, please play this and all of the Hallmark Movie Channel Movies on the regular Hallmark Channel, too. I can't afford to pay more monthly for a different cable package and buy a new HD TV, too. I have noticed that they play all of the Hallmark Channel Movies on the Hallmark Movie Channel so why can't they do the reverse?

  46. Hi, David Cass, Sr: Thanks for the actor info. No worry, you are a great director. What you did with Shadow on the Mesa has made me very proud. It moved fast, sure and was entertaining. The jail escape is a classic. My brothers, both ranchers who rodeoed (one into his 80s), love what you did with the movie. I have told Matt I have another 20 plus Western scripts, and I hope someday, you'll do another. Best, Lee Martin

  47. Hi, to those asking about the Hallmark channel as opposed to the Hallmark Movie Channel. I have no information on the former. I have noticed in the past year or so that the movies did appear on both, but I believe there may be some competition. 49. Hi, Lee Martin. My mum has just watched this movie ( we are in England) and she really enjoyed it. She is wondering where the Rawlins family name inspiration came from? We are Rawlins you see, and it's not a common surname in England ( more Rawlings n Rawlinsons you see) Thanks Debs

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hi, Debs, I had no idea you could watch Hallmark Movie Channel in England! Glad your mother enjoyed it. I'm afraid my script, based on my yet unpublished novel, used a different last name for Wes. The producer has a department that reviews names in scripts to avoid repetition or conflict. They chose the name Rawlins. I like their choice of Rawlins as a name very much. As for England, I had my 17 Western novels (first published here by Avalon Books) reprinted by House of Ulverscroft in large print (Linford Western Library) under Lee Martin and with several pen names because they wanted to do them rather quickly. They were one of the nicest publishers I'd ever come across. Take care and God bless, Lee Martin

  51. David Cass, Sr., I confess, I don't normally keep track of directors for movies in general, but with all the interaction I've read for this movie your name will stick
:-) I agree with Lee, you did a great job with this movie! It was a great script and had great acting, but the directing is what pulled both of those things together and made it into a fantastic movie. It flowed great and this movie should become a classic. One to be watched over and over and never tire of. I know I've watched it a lot already (via DVR) and I love it each time. Great job!

  52. I just watched this movie on the Hallmark Channel for the 2nd time. The movie is great! The acting is superb. Is the movie on DVD? If not.....it NEEDS to be!

  53. Hi, everyone, I'm so glad you enjoy Shadow on the Mesa and also that you appreciate David Cass, Sr.'s great direction. What we saw on the set the day we visited was not only a well oiled machine, but also dedicated actors who took on their roles with enthusiasm. We were allowed to cool off in the barn, and all the actors on set introduced themselves. They were very gracious. We also enjoyed the "dead guys" who went out and laid down in place of the actors. We learned one of these young men had a master's degree from Harvard. The weapons man was a retired police officer. It was just wonderful to watch. And we shared a really great catered lunch. Thanks to all on the set and to all of you writing to this fine web site, Lee Martin

  54. Hi, everyone, so far it's still July for the next showings of SHADOW ON THE MESA. I did learn that when the music is a little too loud, it's because of the broadcast stations, not the movie itself. When it's out on DVD, maybe next year, if not before, you'll find the music is softer and does not interfere with dialogue. Best to all, Lee Martin

  55. Hi, everyone, I just learned that the next showing of SHADOW ON THE MESA will be on the Hallmark Movie Channel August 26 at 11:00 A.M.

  59. Having found this thread regarding this really good and realising it has not got to DVD stage yet has anyone heard anything yet about whether a DVD will be released. It was shown today 17 August and I watched the first half but had to attend a function so missed it and do not have recording facilties nor does Channel 5 here in England have iplayer facility for this movie. I am gutted because the other time is showed the same thing happened so I have no idea how it ends though have a few theories. Does anyone know if there will eventualy be a DVD as I have other Kevin Sorbo moves which I really love. Thanks from England

  60. Hi, to both: So glad you like the movie SHADOW ON THE MESA. I heard it plays on Channel 5 in England. I don't understand YouTube. No DVD has been ordered as yet. The movie plays here again on August 26 in the morning on the Hallmark Movie Channel. I do hope you get to see the ending. The action is great. And Baldy doesn't die (the first versions where he died caused so much ruckus, they saved him in the final). My favorite scenes are when Potluck's friend finds him dead and turns to get clobbered by Wes, and when dynamite rolls into the jail so that Art rushes to the door to get clobbered by Wes. I confess those scenes were probably arranged by the great director David Cass or the stunt men. The novel on which I based my screenplay is still being marketed. It will have more story. Thanks so much for watching the movie! Best, Lee Martin

  78. My husband and I absolutely love this movie. We bought the DVD. I am looking for the theme music for piano, and have searched the internet to no avail. Will it ever be available?

  79. Hi, so glad you love the movie. Not sure if my previous comment was published. I believe rights to Shadow on the Mesa music and DVD belong to Crown Media. You might try them on the Internet or try Galam Vivendi Ent. shown with their address on the DVD. Would love to know if the opening music was a flute. Would also like to know if you find the music. Best, Lee Martin, screenwriter, Shadow on the Mesa.

  81. I am ADDICTED to this movie.!!!. It's hard to find. Other shows are repeated often, but not this one. I love Kevin Sorbo. Just getting use to Wes Brown. Now I like him too. I agree, there needs to be a sequel to them meeting their family members. Pleasssseeee!

  82. Hi and thanks, from Lee Martin, screenwriter SHADOW ON THE MESA. My novel of the same name on which I based my screenplay will be published late October and available in stores and online. I'm hoping it will be a hint for a sequel, especially as it has 3 romances and a family reunion, but the request has to come from the producer Larry Levinson. Thanks again.

  83. Hi, Net, thanks That's a great idea to promote a sequel. The book publisher is at www.Facebook.com/FiveStarCengage and my website, www.leemartin-screenwriter.com. The DVD is on Amazon and other sites, and the book will be there late October.. A big ad will be in True West Magazine, Christmas issue, about the same time the book is released. Thanks, Net, for this great website and for keeping it going. Best, Lee Martin

  84. HI, from Lee Martin, screenwriter, SHADOW ON THE MESA. As to the chance of a sequel, the way it works is, the producer makes the movie, owns it, and licenses it to the Hallmark Movie Channel for a number of showings. But the producer must know in advance the movie is welcome at Hallmark and tries very hard to please them in order to make sure it will be accepted. If Hallmark learns there is interest in a sequel and tells the producer to get with it, it could happen, so first Hallmark has to get the word from its viewers. Their website is www.hallmarkmoviechannel.com. Thanks to all.
