Flip the hourglass, it's time to look back in time...
As I write to you this afternoon, we have a gorgeous snowfall outside our window. It is so picturesque; it makes me feel like singing, Walkin' in a Winter Wonderland! We've had so little snow this past November and December; it is a welcome sight from the safety and warmth inside on this cozy Saturday afternoon. My heart does go out to those who must work and travel in it, though. Be safe, everyone, if you live in one of the places receiving snow or bad weather today.
Seeing the snow outside truly puts my mind back into the Christmas spirit, with reminiscing thoughts of Snow Days and White Christmases of the past. What a perfect time this is to reflect on the Christmas movies from 2023.
In their latest press release, Hallmark shares their grand accomplishment of high ratings success over the 2023 holiday season:

"Hallmark Channel rings in the new year by celebrating its title as the #1 most-watched entertainment cable network of 2023 among key demographics. The channel’s Countdown to Christmas holiday programming event continued its annual domination of the cable charts last quarter, elevating it to be the most-watched entertainment cable network in Q4 among Women 18+ for an entire decade running.
The 31 all-new Countdown to Christmas premieres lifted Hallmark Channel’s holiday programming to be the #1 most-watched program on entertainment cable among key demos throughout its 9-week run. The network’s standout original holiday movie premiere, A Merry Scottish Christmas starring Party of Five costars Lacey Chabert and Scott Wolf, set records across the cable industry as the #1 most-watched cable movie of the year in 2023.
What’s more, sister network Hallmark Movies & Mysteries was the #2 most-watched entertainment network – second to only Hallmark Channel – among key demos during the holiday season in December 2023."
While A Merry Scottish Christmas was the Hallmark Channel's number #1 movie in ratings with 3.33 million viewers, A Biltmore Christmas, starring Bethany Joy Lenz and Kristoffer Polaha, was a very close second with 3.12 million viewers, and in third place, was Christmas Island, starring Rachel Skarsten and Andrew Walker, with 2.62 million viewers.
Whether you loved all three movies or not is basically irrelevant. All that matters truly, when it comes to ratings - is that you watched the movie.
Of course, there's the question now of whether or not we were entertained as viewers with enough holiday films with heart and humor to return to the Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries next year? For me, the answer is... yes! Even though I am hesitant these days when it comes to watching most network and cable television, Hallmark has continued to produce numerous heartwarming stories that my family and I have been easily drawn to. As might be expected, there were some I didn't care for, as well (and I'm sure many of you felt the same), but a higher majority were likable and enticing enough to garner my full attention and make me look forward again to this upcoming Christmas!
As for Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, I'm pleased to say that their number #1 Christmas movie (and movie in general) for 2023, according to ratings, was the Day Spring presentation, Miracle in Bethlehem, PA., starring Laura Vandervoort and Benjamin Ayres, with 1.91 million viewers! (I must say, I find it to be peculiar that Hallmark didn't even mention this title in their press release. Any thoughts?) Heaven Down Here came in second with 1.38 million viewers, and third place was nearly a tie with 1.35 million viewers for To All a Good Night and 1.30 million viewers for Mystery on Mistletoe Lane.
I sincerely hope, based on the ratings success of Miracle in Bethlehem, PA, and Heaven Down Here, that networks can see how viewers are drawn to inspirational films that contain unique characters, uplifting stories, and elements of faith!

Thanks for your summary of ratings, Net, I found some of the films to be lovely, and I avoided the films which clearly pandered to woke type story lines. I avoid all films with Jonathan Bennett, Luke McFarlane and one or two other actors. Overall, it is nice to see positive interactions, decency and courtesy portrayed in many Hallmark films.

Ken, I wholeheartedly agree with you. My husband and I watch the Hallmark channel with our grandchildren and in the past few years we have had to vet the movies before we can watch together. We don’t want them to sneak something in that doesn’t align with our morals and faith based values. When we watch Great American Family, we don’t worry about that. GA family and PureFlix are our go to now for family tv. It’s sad that it has come to having to vet movies before family viewing. Margaret
DeleteMargaret, I can usually tell from the previews if the movie will have an annoying woke agenda and I know to skip those films. Whoever is setting policy at Hallmark decided to cave into the pressure by the DEI activists. Anyway, we have to be grateful that are still so many nice, uplifting films still available. My family and I felt at ease watching their channel throughout the Christmas season, and what a joy it is, knowing this channel actually recognizes the true meaning of Christmas - the birth of Jesus! No matter their ratings, Great American Family will have my full support throughout the year, and of course, this upcoming Christmas!!!

I, too, will watch and support Great American Family regardless of ratings. I am really happy to hear that they are going to be showing two new original series starting very soon. Great American Family is a welcome antidote to the woke mind disease. I never have to be wary when I watch GAF!
DeleteI was pleased with some of Hallmark's new offerings, including all of HMM's. (Given how far away they want to move from their core audience, mentioning that their top rated movie on the 2nd network was a religious themed movie would probably be too embarrassing for them).

DeleteI had a cringe moment this season. We turn on the TV when we leave for the pup (he gets high anxiety if we don’t drown out any noises out front). I usually check what’s on before doing so. One day, I turned it on to a movie I knew, and didn’t bother to check what was next. It was the lesbian movie!!! So our cable tracked that we WATCHED THE MOVIE! It doesn’t matter that we are strongly against it. We “supported” it. 🤦♀️ I hope not to make that mistake again!!!!!
DeleteI often have to wonder why Hallmark has to put article like this when there are other articles that say otherwise. The Variety article does not say that they were number one. Not only does it lists them overall at Number 12 behind Univision, ION, HGTV and ION but it also says overall for the year that they down overall 10%. There are a few networks that are up for the year mostly are news, reality tv with the exception of a few. My viewing habits have changed with Christmas movies offered on GAF & PurFlix networks, to name a few. I know I will enjoy family friendly movies with messages of the Season. I find myself turning those networks on or recording for future viewing.
DeleteAs of late, Hallmark (both networks) has limited storylines of interest. Net’s comment about the highly watched Christmas movie, “Miracle in Bethlehem, PA” is spot on as to the programs people would like to watch. The numbers are proof.
Time will tell as to what networks will be showing and more importantly what viewers are watching.

DeleteIf you read the press release, they're talking about select demographics. That's what all networks point to when the overall ratings are down. To be honest, we didn't enjoy a lot of the newer movies like we thought we would. Hallmark is in kind of a rut with some of their stories.
DeleteAnonymous, you raise a good point. You have to be very careful with these kind of statistics. Notice that they say "among key demographics". So Hallmark may be #1 among these demographics, whatever they are, but much lower overall. Plus, it is easy for a network to have a high percentage increase (like GAF) when the viewership is lower to start with. I don't mean to pick on Hallmark and GAF, but we need to be careful to have all of the facts in front of us before drawing any conclusions.

DeleteHi Net, yes, I too have some strange white stuff on the ground! Could it be...snow??!! Late last night and this morning was our first "sticking" snowfall of the season...FINALLY! It is soooo pretty! I have Christmas music playing, the decorations are still up, and with looking out at the snow...it really feels like the Christmas season! And they are calling for a possible snowstorm Monday night and Tuesday. I don't mind - November and December were so blah around here weather-wise, I'll take it, even if it means lots of shoveling!

DeleteI live in central Oklahoma, so I go around singing, "I'm dreaming of a brown Christmas." ;) Our seasons are Spring, Summer, and Late January and February.
I watched and recorded all 21 GAC's wonderful offerings. I did watch a few of Hallmarks Media offerings; A Biltmore Christmas, Miracle in Bethlehem, PA., A Merry Scottish Christmas, Checkin' It Twice that aired in October With Kevin McGarry, I was not impressed with A Not so Royal Holiday with Will Kemp.
We also watched GENTRI: Finding Christmas, and For King and Country: A Silent Night at Museum of the Bible that were shown on 12/24 on GAC Family. 'Twas the Text Before Christmas", "My Christmas Hero" and "A Paris Christmas Waltz".
Mark 25, I hope your snow has stayed since ours has all melted away. It was such a joy to see it fall again. It really did feel like a special Christmassy moment! :)

Yes there are movies that I don’t agree with because they do not align with my religious/conservative views but I just simply choose not to watch them. It doesn’t get me all riled up where I’m going to boycott Hallmark as I can choose to watch the ones I do agree with and will enjoy. I grew up with my mom watching Hallmark channels and now we enjoy it together so it’s a special interest we share and I definitely will continue going forward. I have to say I’m shocked that the Scottish Christmas one was #1! I would have thought it was Biltmore with A World Record Christmas following in 2nd place….

Since everyone knows about my blog, they are always asking me which movies are best, worst, etc... It's always so much fun to discuss - especially at Christmastime!
So, yeah, "A Merry Scottish Christmas" took #1 in ratings, but in most (unofficial) polls I've seen online, "A Biltmore Christmas" is typically voted as #1 favorite.

Misty, I no longer trust Hallmark. I did watch 3 movies on HMM which were outstanding. GAF also had 3 movies rated #1 by me. Thank God for GAF! No worries there.
DeleteMisty & kitkat, I know what you mean; I used to watch Hallmark all the time, but now, I'm always careful and guarded, even when I watch older movies, due to commercials. It's not my go-to, either, but I'm willing to give them a chance again this Christmas if they create more movies like they for 2023.

I think that while HMM did well, in ratings terms overall, it doesn't match for the whole season and may not be counted for that as a strong channel in comparison to things like sports and HC.
ReplyDeleteI think that the Day Spring Hallmark movies that I liked the Best are The Blessing Bracelet and The Gift of Peace. Miracle of Bethlehem, PA is pretty good not as great as The Gift of Peace and The Blessing Bracelet.

I'm also especially thankful for Great American Family and that they are holding firm in having so many Godly uplifting movies! I also reluctantly agree that Hallmark and the other networks have had many movies that are still conservative and like those mentioned are uplifting as well! I sure wish they would abandon their Woke agendas!

DeleteI, too, am so grateful we have the choice of watching Great American Family, and frankly, my TV remained on their channel for most of the day and all night.
Thankfully, there are other networks (like Hallmark) that also see the value in creating faith-filled and family-friendly content. I, too, wish we could fully trust them to do that, but unfortunately, that's not the case. We will have to remain diligent in seeking the good and weeding out the bad.

I’m sure if the movie starred Lacey (who don’t get me wrong, I do like her), the movie title would have been mentioned prominently. It seems unfair how the networks treat their actors, favoring some over others. Plus, I’m also wondering if the religious title was a reason. Sad, if true.

Honestly, I cannot even remember a thing abt “Christmas Island.” Not actors, not plot, nothing. But with those “forgettable” ones, like my lil sister said, “No, falling in love in [Paris, Rome, Tahiti] is NOT a plot.”

I guess Andrew Walker probably brought some of the viewers for Hallmark :) I’m also surprised that Merry Scottish Christmas is #1, I haven’t watched it because I was just not interested with the storyline, but I guess now I probably should!

That said.. I am still catching up on watching some Christmas movies, ha! I did watch a few this past few days.
WHERE ARE YOU CHRISTMAS
This was obviously a unique storyline, and usually it’s something I look for in a Christmas movie. However there were just many flaws and holes in the story for me personally, and I think this was just a one time watch for me. The romance was not good and, I think the chemistry was not quite there. Michael Rady appeared really really cold. I guess that’s probably his character, but I just couldn’t feel that the 2 lead characters were falling in love. Lyndsey Fonseca was wonderful though, and definitely carried this movie. I was really bothered by the lines in the movie that kept being repeated about the “true meaning of Christmas”. Obviously I can’t expect them to mention anything about Jesus birth, but that’s really the true meaning of Christmas. It was wrong of them to keep portraying and mentioning the true meaning of Christmas as the beautiful decoration, the Christmas events, pageants, etc.. I did not enjoy this too much unfortunately.
A WORLD RECORD CHRISTMAS **contains spoiler**
Wow, this was a really really touching and pulls at all your heartstrings. Even when the premise was not really focused on romance, the relationship of Nikki deLoach’s character and Lucas Bryant’s was really romantic. I just loved seeing them both interact on the screen and couldn’t get enough of them. Marissa’s character as a mom is just so perfect to be played by Nikki, and Lucas Bryant knocked it out of the park playing the Dad. I can’t get over how amazing he was as Charlie’s stepdad and it broke my heart every time Charlie mentioned wanting to make his “real dad” proud. Lucas Bryant needs to be in more Hallmark movies! That ending when Charlie gave Eric the empty chair labeled “Dad” made my cry… just the most beautiful and heartbreaking scene. What an amazing movie!
A SEASON FOR FAMILY
I loved the unique storyline. I also think that maybe this movie could benefit from having a different female lead that’s a bit more emotive. It would definitely elevate this movie in my opinion. Nothing against Stacey Farber, but I personally think for this particular storyline, another actress like Taylor Cole or Rachael Leigh Cook might be a better fit. Brendan Penny was great as always. Their chemistry was just not there though honestly. I adore the brothers bonding with each other. The older brother seemed too perfect and unflawed to me though. The “talk” scene at the end was touching.

And I wholehearted agree, A WORLD RECORD CHRISTMAS is amazing! I wasn't expecting to love it as much as I did, but yeah, that ending! Wow! I just watched it recently, and yet, I'd love to watch it again sometime soon!
Also, the way you described A Season for Family was spot on - exactly how I felt, from the (somewhat lackluster) romance to the friends/brothers. It did seem a little too perfect, at times.
I'll be curious to see what you think of A Merry Scottish Christmas.

I know I don’t read every single comment about a movie but I was very disappointed that I had not seen anything about the new “family tradition “ in Christmas in Notting Hill. I am talking about the family meeting and going to a drag queen show. It was full of whooping and hollering and laughing and fingure pointing. And It was happening before I even knew it. It was absolutely not needed, guess they just stuck it in for shock value? Well it worked. I was so unsure of what I was seeing I had to look it up and I did find an article that mentioned it. This is the most disgusted I have ever been with hallmark. And they had been so much better this year. To me , this blew anything else they did this year.

I don’t want to be a downer. We all thrive on the positive perspective. I had an experience the first week of December that reminded me how much Hallmark has changed. I was visiting my parents after Thanksgiving. They wanted to watch one of “Suzie’s movies,” since they usually watch more serious films. My dad found a Netflix movie he touted as a Hallmark-type movie. I don’t remember the title, but it was LLohan, abt a skier and amnesia. It was not my favorite and they were disenchanted, thinking all Hallmark is like that. Fluff.
ReplyDeleteThe next night, we looked all over for “Silver Bells” or “Fallen Angel.” We found “Silver Bells” and through the film they kept asking, “Is this a Hallmark movie??” Yes. I just commented that they simply don’t make them like that anymore.
Is there no market for movies of that quality? A deeper storyline, quality acting, etc… Something memorable 3 yrs later. :) I love all the clean Hallmark, etc movies (the wittier the dialogue and the greater the chemistry the better!), but just a little sad that Hallmark Hall of Fame is not a thing. There are dozens of these new movies every year, and they just rotate as more of the predictable stories. I do find more meaningful shows on HMM, but I sure wish GAC would go for quality over quantity!

DeleteSome of the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Christmas movies did have more of that inspirational content this year, but it is still hard to complete with the beloved holiday favorites from the past. I, too, love those old Hall of Fame movies. We were just saying the other day how we missed seeing "A Season for Miracles" during the Christmas season, but thankfully, I recorded it on Hallmark Drama and we have it on DVD, so we plan to watch it soon.
I, too, hope Great American Family will create even more movies like this, as well. For me, A Christmas Blessing, My Christmas Hero, and Bringing Christmas Home all had that inspirational touch to them that I like. Hopefully, GFAM will create more movies like these, especially since these three were among the viewer's favorites for 2023.

I watched all of these movies and I was also surprised to see "Christmas Island" had such high ratings. The movie was just okay and kind of boring. I am not surprised to see "A Merry Scottish Christmas" at the top because they really hyped that movie and I believe people tuned in for nostalgic reasons. I liked the movie but did not love it. However, as everyone knows, I LOVED "A Biltmore Christmas" so much. And, I enjoyed "Miracle in Bethlehem, PA". Overall, I thought this past Christmas slate of movies was much better than in 2022.

DeleteSo, I keep playing older ones throughout the day when I'm busy and in and out, and of course, I still have quite a few new ones to watch too. That helps me a lot. I could never shut it off cold turkey.
Also, I felt the exact same way about "A Merry Scottish Christmas." The nostalgia of seeing Lacey and Scott together again is what pulled me in, as well.

DeleteYes, I can't shut it off cold turkey either. :-) I still search for older Christmas movies as well and set them up to watch. It has been a shock going from watching new Christmas movies daily to once a week.
And, it was strange watching a new movie, that wasn't holiday related yesterday. "Love on the Right Course" was nice. Decent storyline, wonderful leads and supporting players and spectacular scenery. Oh my gosh Hungary is so lovely.
I am very hopeful we do have even more movies to love this upcoming Christmas. :-)

The ratings don't really tell you how much people liked the movie.

Many will (as Net did) have watched A Merry Scottish Christmas to see Lacey and Scott.
Similarly with Biltmore and Christmas Island.
When it comes to reviews you may then get a different story - Biltmore was the most liked Hallmark movie by a good distance.
In 2022 people watched Haul Out The Holly simply because of Lacey but opinion on the movie was split hence a big drop for Haul Out The Holly 2.
I don't know what they're playing at with Lacey and Andrew they haven't had a decent Christmas movie for a couple of years now.
Scottish Christmas was pretty dismal, a horrible mother, zero chemistry between Lacey and her co-star and a poor ending - Florence
I haven't felt like watching Hallmark much this Holiday. Miracle at Bethlehem PA was so good, though. I'm more and more disenchanted with Hallmark. Not sure I'll be watching next year - we shouldn't have to be wary of what we watch.
ReplyDeleteI was so busy over the holidays (mostly watching Christmas movies in real time rather than recording them since my DVR is still full of last year's unwatched Christmas movies), that I'm just now getting to this post. I came here expecting a "ballot" to rate this year's movies since I watched more vs. recording them like last year. I'll have to rate them in a separate post.
ReplyDeleteThere were so many earlier responses to this post that I couldn't get through them all, but my question out of the gate is, "Are the ratings talked about in the PR only on first-run presentations?" I watch most of these on mid-week repeats since everybody (not just Christmas movie presenters) jam most of their new programming into the weekends (and with some new movies this season having been presented starting on Thursdays, I have to say extended weekends).

DeleteI would love to read your rankings of the 2023 Christmas movies. I'm still watching them, and I believe many who visit here are also doing the same. Even still, I would love to know your thoughts on which movies you enjoyed best.
As for ratings, Nielsen takes the numbers from the original programming airing and unfortunately, excludes repeats.
