"God Bless America"

by Irving Berlin

While the storm clouds gather far across the sea

Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free

Let us all be grateful for a land so fair

As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer

God bless America, land that I love

Stand behind her and guide her

Through the night with a light from above

From the mountains, to the prairies

To the oceans white with foam

God bless America

Happy Labor Day, Weekend!

Picnic Time Piccadilly Picnic Basket with Service for TwoTo most Americans, this weekend is considered the last weekend in Summer for picnics and barbecues. And for Ladies, we are supposed to put away our white shoes. (Ugh!)  I love Summer - so saying goodbye to it isn't so easy. I always say - "As long as it's hot - it's Summer"... and trust me, here in the midwest, it's still Hot!

Plus, don't forget - after that, there is Indian Summer, too! ... And as far as my white shoes go - well, I don't think the Fashion Police will get me if I should decide to wear my Lilly Pulitzer white sandals just one more time!

Hopefully, many of you will have some time off and be able to spend the weekend and Labor Day (Monday), with Family and Friends! Isn't that red gingham picnic basket (above), just darling? If you want details about it - just click on the picture.

If you should have a rainy day, there are lots of nice Family Drama Marathons on TV this weekend.... including: The Waltons, Little House on the Prairie, Heartland, and Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. Actually, for big fans of The Waltons, like myself, there will be two days of Marathons - Sunday on the Hallmark Channel and Monday on INSP.

Check the Family TV Schedule for more...

Have a great Labor Day Weekend... God bless!

Mrs. Miracle

MOVIE REVIEW

Mrs. Miracle

Network: Hallmark Channel

Original Air Date: December 5, 2009

CAST:

James Van Der Beek ... Seth Webster
Doris Roberts ... Mrs. Merkle / Mrs. Miracle
Erin Karpluk ... Reba Maxwell
Chelah Horsdal ... Kate Preston
Rikki Gagne ... Cathy
Peter Graham-Gaudreau ... Doug
Johannah Newmarch ... Vicki
Michael Strusievici ... Judd Webster
Almeera Jiwa ... Cindy
Valin Shinyei ... Jason Webster
Brittany-Ellen Willacy ... Clerk

PLOT:

from the Hallmark Channel:

Seth Webster is a frustrated, single father who can’t find a housekeeper to manage his overly energetic twin sons. When a seemingly magical housekeeper arrives at Christmastime, she helps Seth move on after his wife’s death and find new love that brings the family together again.

Seth Webster's heart never healed after he lost his adored wife. Now, with Christmas approaching, wild twin boys to raise alone, a home in chaos, and the latest in a long line of exasperated housekeepers quitting in disgust, Seth needs more than help to keep his family together . . . he needs a miracle.

And then a miracle arrives on his doorstep. Her name is Mrs. Merkle, but the kids call her "Mrs. Miracle"—and from the moment the warm, knowing, and very patient nanny appears, everything is different. Her sassy spirit is infectious, and it gives Seth the courage to approach Reba, a beautiful travel agent who's been hurt and betrayed, and is afraid to ever love again. Through the magic of faith—and with a little help from a children's Christmas pageant and a lot of encouragement from Mrs. Miracle—Seth and Reba might just be able to find a Christmas miracle of their very own: true love.

Movie Review:

Mrs. Miracle, starring Doris Roberts, is fun, sweet, & magical in a Mary Poppins kind of way. Mrs. Merkel, who the children call Mrs. Miracle, is a Nanny, who has come to help widowed Seth Webster with his twin boys - Judd and Jason.

Seth is still privately mourning the loss of his wife - he won't talk about her with his sons and there aren't any pictures of her in their home - yet, Mrs. Miracle finds one and shares it with the boys, who are eager to know more about their mother. This, at first, angers Seth, but he slowly starts to deal with the past - as he opens up his heart to a new love with Reba, a local travel agaent, who is also directing the boys in their Christmas School Play. Reba is also dealing with her past lost love and learning to trust, again. It's fun to see how Mrs. Miracle brings them all together!

The Three Gifts

MOVIE REVIEW

The Three Gifts

starring Dean Cain ("The Gambler, The Girl and the Gunslinger"), Jean Louisa Kelly ("Yes, Dear"), Mimi Kennedy ("Dharma and Greg") and Reginald VelJohnson ("Family Matters").

Network: Hallmark Channel

Original Air Date: December 19, 2009

CAST -

Dean Cain ... Jack Green
Jean Louisa Kelly ... Cherie Green
Mimi Kennedy ... Rita Green
Spencir Bridges ... Ray
Donovan Scott ... Santa
Dylan Sprayberry ... Mike
Reginald VelJohnson ... Rodney
Alex Zubarev ... Henry

PLOT -

from Hallmark

A holiday Hallmark Channel Original Movie about a childless couple who invite three orphans to spend Christmas with them and end up falling in love with the boys.

Because their orphanage is being renovated, three orphan boys who are known for being troublemakers temporarily move in with Jack (Cain) and Cheri (Kelly) Green over the Christmas holiday. Rita Green (Kennedy), Jack's aunt who runs the orphanage, asks the couple to take the unruly children during the renovation because they are a loving couple and she knows they will be good to the children. The Greens are unable to have children, and Jack is hesitant about becoming a father. He'd rather invent toys for the couple's toy company.

Rodney (VelJohnson), the toy shop foreman, keeps an eye on the boys who at first visit and then eventually work in the factory.

The situation is working out nicely except for one thing: Believing that one of them will be adopted by the couple, the boys are competing with each other. But they are all in for a big surprise because the couple has fallen in love with all three and are trying to figure out how to adopt all of them.

Movie Review -

This is a precious movie about 3 little orphan boys who each desperately want a family. They have bonded together at the boys home, yet they don't always get along with one another when they get a possible chance to stay with a local toymaker, Jack Green, and his wife, Cherie.

One of the boys overhears the Greens talking over possibilty that they may adopt "one" of them - so the boys tattle on one another and compete over who it will it be.

Three Gifts is a beautiful and touching story about family and adoption.

This movie is absolutely family-friendly... so it's definitely one you can all enjoy together.

An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving

MOVIE REVIEW

An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving:
a Hallmark Channel Holiday Movie.

CAST:

Jacqueline Bisset ... Isabella
Helene Joy ... Mary
Tatiana Maslany ... Tilly
Vivien Endicott-Douglas ... Prudence
Gage Munroe ... Solomon
Kristopher Turner ... Gad

PLOT:
from the Hallmark Channel-

"An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving" is the story of a young woman searching for her true path amidst a holiday season of desicions and discoveries and is based on an 1881 short story by American author and poet, Louisa May Alcott.

Disturbed by the financial strains her family has endured following the death of her father, 17 year old Tilly (Tatiana Maslany), a headstrong young woman, with a keen intellect, writes a letter to her grandmother Isabella Caldwell (Jacqueline Bisset), whom she has never met. In fact, Tilly's mother Mary (Helene Joy), has rarely spoken of her. In the letter to Isabella, Tilly pretends to be Mary, and begs for financial assistance. Mary is soon shocked to come face-to-face with her estranged, high society mother from New York. Isabella recounts the letter, which Mary immediately realizes has been written wholly out of Tilly's imagination and concern for the family.

The family reunion is far from ideal, as Mary has long resented the lack of love and moral support she received from her mother, and Isabella has not forgiven Mary for abandoning her life of privilege to marry her "vagrant" husband years earlier.

In the midst of this family drama, Tilly is torn among love and duty to her mother and siblings, a deepening romance with her boyfriend, Gad (Kristopher Turner), and the wonderfully textured life offered by her wealthy, wise grandmother. Perhaps Tilly won't have to choose. She can have it all.

Movie Review:

This is a very decent family movie.

As mentioned in the plot information above, this movie is based upon the writings of Louisa May Alcott, whose most popular work is Little Women. I am rather fond of period movies… and pioneer settings. This reminded me of a mix of Little House on the Prairie, Anne of Green Gables, and of course, Little Women.

I enjoyed the story of this sweet little family, who had recently lost their father and was trying to make it through the winter and life. The main character, Tilly, is an aspiring writer – and each new scene begins with her writing and journaling her thoughts on the events happening in her family.

It’s a beautiful story of family reconciliation as the Grandmother and Mother forgive one another of mistakes made in the past. It’s precious how the little boy is determined that they celebrate Thanksgiving no matter what… and the Grandmother asks him why it is so important, and he replies in his sweet child-like manner, “It’s how we know we’re okay.”

The family knows they won’t have much for Thanksgiving dinner, so the Mother puts more emphasis on the family sewing together a lovely Thanksgiving tablecloth. It is sweet to watch them work on it throughout the movie, and it turns out to be so beautiful – they display it proudly at the end of the movie.

Tilly becomes engaged to Gad, (their romance is so sweet!)... but is hesitant at first, at the idea of leaving her family. Their Mother becomes terribly ill and is near death. It is touching how the family cares for her… and it is a precious moment when she is able to join family and friends for Thanksgiving dinner.
