Remembering Actress Valerie Harper - Plus, MeTV and getTV give Special TV Tributes

Last week we lost one of television's leading ladies... legendary actress, Valerie Harper, who lost her battle with cancer, at the age of 80, on Friday, August 30, 2019.

Whether you watched in real time or reruns, many of us know and love Valerie Harper in her various roles... from The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rhoda, Love Boat, the sitcom Valerie, and lots of guest roles and TV movies, including: The Great Mom Swap, Promised Land, Touched by an Angel, Mary and Rhoda, UPtv's The Town That Came A-Courtin' and so on. Valerie also starred in Hallmark Channel's Fixing Pete and Signed, Sealed, Delivered (the TV Series).

I especially loved Valerie in her role on Signed, Sealed, Delivered as the Dead Letter Office Supervisor, Theresa Capodiamonte. She had such an inspirational spark about her with this character. One of the episodes was aptly named Time to Start Livin' and in the episode Valerie's character did just that, as she decided to take a chance and live out her dreams while it was still possible to make them happen!

We are blessed now by Valerie's legacy of films and TV series, that have brought joy, laughter, and inspiration to generation after generation.

Valerie Harper leaves behind her husband, Tony Cacciotti, and her daughter, Cristina. My thoughts and prayers go out to her dear family and friends.

WITH A SPECIAL PRESENTATION OF “THE BEST OF RHODA”

TRIBUTE BEGINS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 8th AT 5:00 PM ET/PT

September 3, 2019 – Chicago, IL – MeTV Network pays tribute to the career of beloved actress Valerie Harper with a special presentation of select episodes from The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Rhoda, airing on MeTV this Sunday, September 8th beginning at 5:00pm ET/PT through 8:00pm ET/PT. (Episodes listed below).

Valerie Harper will forever be remembered as Rhoda Morgenstern, the wisecracking and lovelorn best friend to Mary Richards on the Primetime Emmy award-winning series, The Mary Tyler Moore Show. With her signature charm and snark, Harper made Rhoda one of the most memorable feminist icons of television in the 1970s, and earned three Primetime Emmy Awards for her performance, before landing her own spin-off series Rhoda in 1974.

Rhoda is the first and only television series to earn the top spot in Nielsen ratings for its premiere episode, where Rhoda leaves Minneapolis to return home to New York City and fires up a whirlwind romance with divorcee Joe Gerard, played by David Groh. At the time, the iconic New York wedding between Rhoda and Joe was the most watched television episode of the 1970s, with a whopping 52 million Americans tuning in. Airing from 1974-1978, the series earned 17 Primetime Emmy nominations, and seven Golden Globe nominations. Harper herself earned her fourth Emmy Award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical, as well as the Golden Globe for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy.

Harper went on to appear in a handful of television series, including The Love Boat, Touched By An Angel, Melrose Place, Sex and the City, Desperate Housewives, Dancing with the Stars and 2 Broke Girls. In 2000, Harper reunited with Mary Tyler Moore for the made-for-TV movie Mary and Rhoda. In 2013, Harper revealed that she had been diagnosed with a rare and incurable form of brain cancer, but continued to work, appearing in short films, on stage, and even voicing characters on animated series, The Simpsons and American Dad.

Throughout her career, Harper earned four Primetime Emmy Awards, one Golden Globe, and one Tony nomination. Outside of show business, Harper was a longtime representative for the Hunger Project, an organization that supports rural women in developing countries, and co-founded L.I.F.E. (Love Is Feeding Everyone) in 1983, a charity dedicated to preventing hunger in Los Angeles. Harper is survived by her husband of 32 years, Tony Cacciotti.

getTV will pay tribute to four time-Emmy-winning actress Valerie Harper, who died Friday, by airing a special 2013 episode of “Hot in Cleveland,” in which Harper guest-starred, on Friday, September 6 at 7:30 pm ET. The episode, entitled “Love Is All Around,” also guest stars Mary Tyler Moore and Cloris Leachman and series regulars Betty White and Georgia Engel, who all co-starred with Harper on the long-running “Mary Tyler Moore Show.” On that series, Harper created the role she was best-known for, of Rhoda Morgenstern, who she later played on a spin-off series, “Rhoda.”

The actresses all play former members of a bowling team who reunite, causing old rivalries to resurface. “Hot in Cleveland,” which also stars Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick, airs weeknights from 6-8 PM ET on getTV.

With a song in her heart, Debbie Reynolds captured ours. This is a lovely tribute TCM is giving in Debbie's memory. How I wish they were also playing one of my favorite Debbie Reynolds' movies "Tammy and the Bachelor." It's one of those treasured pieces of cinema I captured one day when watching TCM. And, I was delighted I did! The first movie in the Tammy series of films is my favorite of the collection. The moment that truly steals the show is...

As part of the Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM) 100 Movie Tribute... each night at Midnight the Disney Channel is continuing to air 2 of the original DCOMs!

Since we all LOVE Christmas movies here at "It's a Wonderful Movie", I thought it would be fun to mention... this week the Disney Channel is airing 3 of their Original Christmas Movies, starting with Good Luck Charlie, It's Christmas! on Wednesday night at Midnight (technically Thursday morning!) and then on Thursday night at Midnight (technically Friday morning!) they are airing 2 Christmas movies back to back... The Ultimate Christmas Present and 'Twas the Night.

A little Christmas in June is the perfect way to cool off this summer!

Remembering Beloved Disney Actor Dean Jones

Actor Dean Jones

known for his strong faith and friendly smile 

passed away on September 1, 2015.

He had Parkinson's Disease.

Anytime I would see Dean Jones in any other movie or show, he always brought joy to my heart, and took me back to my remembrances of his Disney days. I'm sure many of you feel the same, as you've watched these movies, over the years, with your families.

Those classic roles he portrayed will forever be cherished in the classic Disney vault of films. From 1965-1977, he held the leading role in numerous Disney movies, including The Love Bug (Which I recall seeing for the first time on video in the 3rd grade! I loved it!), That Darn Cat, The Ugly Dachshund, The Million Dollar Duck, The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit, The Shaggy D.A., Snowball Express, and so on!!!

Jones also co-starred in 1997 remake versions of both That Darn Cat and The Love Bug.

Dean Jones was married to Mae Inez Entwisle in 1954. They had two children together and divorced in 1971. Around 1973, before his father's death, Dean Jones became a devout born-again Christian. Following that he took roles in several Christian films. Dean was presently married to Lory Patrick Jones. They were wed in 1973 and had one son.

"In 1998 (via wikipedia) Jones founded the Christian Rescue Committee (CRC), an organization that helps provide a "way of escape to Jews, Christians, and others persecuted for their faith."

Jones last film was Mandie and the Secret Tunnel, in 2008. In classic Dean Jones "Disney" style, it is a decent family friendly film, which gives an exciting lesson on history and life, with a mix of mystery, faith, and drama.

In 2001, Jones starred as Scrooge in a classic adaption of Charles Dicken's "A Christmas Carol" TV mini-film, titled Scrooge & Marley.

Jones also narrated and starred in a stage production, tiled The Gospel According to Scrooge, that can be seen on the iTBN web-site.

Beyond the stage and screen, Dean Jones does a spectacular performance in the audio drama narration of the first book in the delightful Jan Karon Mitford book series, At Home in Mitford. Jones gives voice to the lead character, Father Timothy. After listening to the first story, my family fell in love with the entire Mitford series.

"Though he'd grown up in a religious home and even briefly attended Asbury, a Christian college in Kentucky, Jones had rejected the faith of his family. He righted his blighted relationships, remarried, and began seeking out projects on and off screen that he could do for the glory of God."

Mickey Rooney in the Classic Christmas Movie "Love Finds Andy Hardy"

In honor of the late Mickey Rooney's birthday today, I would like to share my review of Love Finds Andy Hardy, his very entertaining family movie, set a Christmastime in the small town of Carvel.

You will find yourself completely captivated

with Andy Hardy and all of his wonderful, delightful schemes! 

This timeless tale is from a bygone era of wholesome American values

that hopefully will never completely go out of style.

The Opening credits begin and you are immediately introduced to the Hardy family - Judge Hardy, the Father, and Mother Emily, Sister Marian, and of course, Andy Hardy!

In each of the "Andy Hardy films",

Andy always seems to get himself in a bit of trouble...

First of all, Car trouble...

(Andy owes $8 on the car he put a $12 down payment on!)

and then, Girl Trouble... times two!!!

(Polly Benedict is Andy's girl, but her family is leaving over Christmas to visit her Grandmother... so she won't be able to go to the Christmas Dance with Andy.

And, Cynthia, is Beezy's girl; however, Beezy, who will also be gone over Christmas, is willing to mail Andy that $8, if Andy dates Cynthia, while he's gone and takes her to the Christmas Dance!)

Cynthia is a sweet girl, but Andy soon finds out -

they have nothing in common.

Luckily for Andy, he has an understanding Father,

he can always go to for advice...

 However, Fathers' thoughts are somewhat consumed

with Mother, who has received a telegram...

Emily's Mother has had a stroke and she must go and care for her.

The family vows to take care of the house and each other

while Mother is away...

In the meantime... a new girl has arrived in town... Betsy Booth.

(Yes, it's Judy Garland, the girl next door! (pun intended here for all "Meet Me in St. Louis fans!) This is Mickey and Judy's 2nd film together and just the start to their fantastic on screen duo.)

Betsy and Andy become good friends and she tries to help him

figure out his troubles.

She even offers Andy the money he needs, but he doesn't accept it.

Andy thinks everything will eventually work out.

Until...

Beezy sends him a letter with no money inside

and Polly sends a telegram saying she will be home, after all,

for the Christmas Dance.

Once again... Andy is in trouble

and he takes his problems to his father.

(who always knows best!)

He is understanding and kind,

but he is longing to contact his wife Emily, who is still away.

(Emily's mother doesn't have a telephone and Emily is always

disturbed by telegrams... so, those won't work.)

Judge Hardy says “I never expected to see anything like this in my life”.
