🚩 Must-See Camp Adventures: 'Summer Sparks,' 'A Week Away: The Series,' & New Premiere: 'Bad Counselors'

( *click here to enlarge image*

Today, I'm excited to share a couple of reviews that perfectly capture the spirit of summer!

First up is a camp-themed, family-friendly movie, followed by a faith-based camp series that's especially wonderful for teens. Both feature familiar faces you'll recognize from the Hallmark Channel and Great American Family. And be sure to stick around until the end of this post for a first look at an all-new camp movie premiere!

Before we dive into the reviews, I first have to say... there's just something special about camp stories, isn't there, whether it's roasting marshmallows around a crackling campfire, singing along with new friends, or growing deeper in your faith.

If you love those special moments as much as I do, grab your favorite trail mix, settle into your comfiest camp chair, and let's head to camp together! Happy reading, friends!

✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

Summer Sparks – (currently streaming free through the Roku channel)

This is a very sweet, lighthearted camp movie – ideal for families! Adam (Jesse Metcalfe) and Monica (Kathryn Davis) are single parents who are slow, at first, at opening themselves up to the idea of love again, but as they spend more and more time together, there’s a subtle attraction between the two.

Both of their families decide to attend Camp Evergreen to reconnect over a cooking competition.

The kids are nice and get along well together, which is great to see. Monica's teenage daughter, Hannah, develops a sweet crush on fellow camper Sam, who also happens to be competing in the cook-off with his family. Sam also just happens to be the son of Monica’s childhood camp nemesis (of course, right?), who’s determined to win the competition at any cost.

A few mild cautions for kids: While this movie is really wholesome and G-rated, I just wanted to mention a few things… a teenage girl uses "Oh my G--" once or twice, Jesse Metcalfe and his son are still grieving the loss of their wife/mother while attempting to bond through this camp experience, and there’s someone at the camp who is a bully, at first, but eventually this person has a change of heart and chooses kindness.

Towards the end of the movie, the kids scheme to give Adam and Monica some alone time together – to which Adam says something to the effect of – “Did our kids try to ‘Parent Trap’ us?” It’s a really cute nod to that classic Disney camp movie!

Overall, this movie is a pleasant watch highlighting family, friendships, forgiveness, and a fresh Summer feel! ~Net

A Week Away: The Series - Streaming through Angel Studios

And speaking of camp, I just recently re-watched the camp series, A Week Away, that first came out last Fall through Angel Studios, and I was once again amazed at the deep, profound spiritual message in this series. It’s basically a mix of Grease, High School Musical, and Camp Rock meets Church Camp!

The main focus of the story is a foster teen named Max who arrives at camp very resistant to any message about God’s love. Max has carried years of pain, disappointment, and unanswered questions. He's joined by several other foster teens who wrestle with similar wounds, asking the same question many believers have faced: Where was God when I needed Him most?

It’s incredible to watch as the walls they’ve built gradually begin to fall. Each of them has to make an individual choice on whether to follow God. It takes some time, but as hearts begin to soften, bitterness gives way to forgiveness and healing.

The musical sequences are impressively staged. The choreography ranges from upbeat and energetic to emotionally intimate performances that actually deepen the story.

And while there are catchy and silly songs of Christian-themed pop and rock, there’s also an incredibly moving cover of Lauren Daigle’s “You Say,” which I have to say was done so beautifully as a duet with two of the show's leads. It’s my favorite song of the whole series, although many others are quite memorable, as well.

Carlos PenaVega (Mr. Manhattan, Get Him Back for Christmas) is wonderfully cast as Jeremy, the camp pastor, bringing relatability, humor, and steady spiritual guidance to the campers. His scenes with Max, the troubled teen, are truly inspiring and unforgettable. Alexa PenaVega (Before Your Father Finds Us, Get Him Back for Christmas) is also seen in a short cameo appearance.

And many will likely recognize Leigh-Allyn Baker from the Disney show Good Luck, Charlie.

While there's plenty of laughter, camp competitions, friendships, and even a few humorous pranks at the camp, the part I loved most was that the story continually points back to God's unconditional love. It's a great reminder that our identity isn't defined by rejection, abandonment, or past mistakes, but by God who calls us His own.

Cautions: The series includes discussions of childhood abandonment and foster care, bullying among teens, honest conversations about questioning faith, innocent teen crushes, two teenagers sharing a kiss, and a variety of harmless camp pranks. While some of the themes are emotionally weighty at times, they ultimately lead toward healing and redemption.

Overall, A Week Away: The Series is much more than a fun summer musical... it's an uplifting, inspiring story filled with memorable songs, dance performances, and a powerful message of discovering faith. It's an excellent choice for families and church youth groups - preteen age and up.

A Week Away: The Series is one of those series that stays with you long after the credits roll, just like our own camp or summer memories.

This series, with 7 episodes nearly 30 minutes each, was created for Angel Studios by Alan Powell (Christmas in the Smokies, Get Him Back for Christmas). It is a spin-off based on the Netflix film A Week Away.

A Week Away: The Series initially premiered August 28, 2025 through Angel’s streaming platform. And more great news, if you haven't heard... Season 2 is currently in the pre-production phase!

The movie soundtrack for A Week Away: The Series is available on Amazon.

You can also stream the first two episodes of season 1 free through the A Week Away Series YouTube page or the Angel website.

✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

Bad Counselors - Currently in Theaters

Speaking of camp and Angel Studios, the streaming platform also released its approval for the new camp-themed movie, Bad Counselors, which will run in theaters for a limited time - July 22nd through July 27th.

This is Angel's statement on 'Bad Counselors':

"Angel is proud to support this hilarious fish-out-of-water story about two carefree fraternity brothers who find themselves just two weeks away from expulsion.

With 120 hours of community service standing between them and staying in school, they hatch an unlikely plan: pose as Christian camp counselors. The only problem? They wouldn't know a hymn from a hot dog.

What follows is a heartfelt comedy full of unexpected friendships, hilarious mishaps, and surprising lessons that prove sometimes the people least prepared for the job are the ones who need it most."

Note: This movie is rated PG-13

Also, look for Dominic Lopez (Chasing Christmas, Once Upon a Christmas Wish) in the supporting cast as one of the campers. You can also see him at the end of the trailer below.

Bad Counselors | OFFICIAL TRAILER:

✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

If you've seen any of these camp-themed movies and want to share a thought or review, please do so in comments.

Or... if you have another camp movie you love, please share those in comments, too.

I've yet to see the original A Week Away movie from Netflix, so if any of you have seen it, I'd love to know your take on it.

My classic camp movie suggestions are:
The Parent Trap (love both versions!),
Camp Nowhere (super funny, but beware of minor language like Home Alone),
Troop Beverly Hills (such a sweet movie... see Kelli Martin as a young girl in that movie and Shelley Long portrays the troop leader), and
Camp Cucamonga (look for Candace Cameron Bure, Danica McKellar, and lots more recognizable stars in this 90s camp classic)!

Plus, I've always liked the Hallmark camp-themed movie, Kiss at Pine Lake, starring Barry Watson, Mia Kirshner, Brennan Elliott, and Matty Finochio!

Hope you enjoy these camp shows as much as your favorite outdoor adventure!

Blessings,

Such great news today from Great American Media! It had been previously announced that the series “Abilene” would be in-the-works, but now we have even more exciting details! The series is coming early 2027!

From its incredible cast to its music-filled story, Abilene is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated new series on Great American Family. See which talented stars have joined the cast in the official press release below!

I have a feeling this is going to be a series we'll all be humming about!

Press Release via Great American Media:

Great American Media
Strikes a Powerful New Chord
with “Abilene,”
A Bold New, Original Series
Coming to Great American Media
Platforms Early 2027

A Story of Starting Over — When the Road Leads You Home

NEW YORK, NY — July 23, 2026 — Great American Media continues its aggressive expansion into premium Original Series in 2027. Today, the company announced “Abilene” starring Rose Reid (Christmas On Every Page, Karen Kingsbury’s A Thousand Tomorrows) in the title role of “Abby” – legal name Abilene– a young woman looking for a fresh start.

Also starring in the ensemble cast is Elizabeth Mitchell (The Santa Clauses, “Lost”) as “Hannah,” Eric Close (“Nashville,” Angel Falls: A Novel Holiday) as “Ben,” Jordan Belfi (“All American,” “Moonlight”) as “Lashay,” Andrew Ferguson (Faith & Forgiveness: A Duck Dynasty Love Story) as “Matt,” Michael Pavone (The Mystery of Her) as “John,” Johnathon Schaech (“Blue Ridge”) as “Al,” Kevin Quinn (“Bunk’d,” “A Week Away”) as “Noah,” Taylor Kalupa (Christmas at The Starlight, “Blue Ridge”) as “Kayla,” and singer/songwriter, Riley Clemmons (“Broken Prayers,” “A Week Away”) as “Sam.” The World Premiere of “Abilene” will stream on Great American Pure Flix, and air on Great American Family and GFAM+ in early 2027.

“Abilene” follows Abby Morgan, a young woman looking to start over who finds herself stranded in the quiet, weathered town of Fair Haven, Ohio. What begins as a temporary stop becomes something more when Abby is offered work — and a place to stay — at a family-owned cider mill. As Abby forms unexpected bonds with the Wagner family — each navigating their own lives — she is confronted by realities of her talent and past. Through music, hard work, and the quiet grace of a community that believes in second chances, Abby begins a journey worth exploring.

“‘Abilene’ is reflective of the kind of story we tell at Great American Media. It is beautifully made, emotionally resonant, and grounded in values that matter,” said Bill Abbott, President and CEO of Great American Media. “We are proud to create an environment where exceptional talent can do meaningful work and where strong storytelling and purpose go hand in hand. As our Originals slate continues to grow, our commitment remains simple: deliver high-quality stories that audiences can trust, enjoy, and remember,” Abbott concluded.

“‘Abilene’ was born out of a love for the people and places that make small-town America so special, said series’ creator, Nicholas DiBella. “It’s a world filled with music, orchards, front porches, family traditions, and the belief that hope can still change a life. We feel incredibly blessed to have found a partner in Great American Media, whose appreciation for uplifting storytelling aligns so beautifully with the spirit of ‘Abilene,’” DiBella concluded.

Set against the backdrop of orchards, open skies, and a town that time nearly forgot, “Abilene” blends heartfelt drama with music and romance, weaving together themes of forgiveness, identity, and belonging. At its core is a simple but powerful question: Can you ever truly outrun your past — or does grace find you when you finally stop running?

With a compelling ensemble of characters, a richly textured setting, and an amazing soundtrack of Original music that echoes Abby’s inner journey, the series invites viewers into a world where even the most broken paths can lead somewhere beautiful.

Executive producers of “Abilene” are Nicholas DiBella who also serves as Showrunner, Director, and Writer, Brent Ryan Green who is also co-series Showrunner, Director), Jim Pavone, Chris Bueno, and Shelia Hart. Faith Street Films in association with Toy Gun Films is production company.

My Thoughts on Ride and A Thousand Tomorrows:

For those of you who have been asking, the new Hallmark Channel television series Ride does premiere this Sunday night; however, I wanted you to be aware one of the characters, Tuff McMurray (portrayed by Jake Foy), is an openly gay cowboy. Tuff is the youngest son of Isabel (Nancy Travis), so it appears he will be one of the major characters throughout the series. Due to my own moral and religious beliefs, I will not be watching or promoting this series.

As I mentioned in my intro, I finally had the chance this week to stream A Thousand Tomorrows on Pureflix, the new streaming series based on Karen Kingsbury's book. Well, I was hoping this series might be the family-friendly alternative to Ride, since both are series about bull riding, country life, horses, romance, etc..., but for me, personally, it wasn't. I can understand needing to show character development and change from being a sinner to finding redemption, but 10-15 minutes into the first episode, we see the main lead male character, Cody Gunner, in a bar drinking with his friends after a rodeo competition. As Cody pays his bill for the drinks, a random woman is sitting next to him at the bar, and at first, Cody doesn't seem interested, but then she asks if he wants to "talk," and he finally gives in, and they leave together. None of the intimacy part is shown, but the next morning we can clearly see they've had a one-night stand. I was absolutely floored and shocked, as this was definitely not something I was expecting to see just minutes into a series on Pureflix that I was watching with my family. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed. After seeing this content and the way the other bull riders constantly talked about women in a lustful sort of way, the rest of the series is a pass for me.

New Movies:

Hopefully, the new movies airing this weekend will be good, and you all will get a chance to check them out. I'm quite curious about The Confession Musical on UPtv. I'm not sure if I'll get a chance to see ALL 3 HOURS of it Sunday night, but I will watch a little and record the rest.

Please note: I haven't pre-screened the NEW movies listed above. If you'd like to post a review on whether a film is family-friendly, please share in comments.

I hope you have a nice weekend!
Blessings to you all,
Net

On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. Something's Brewing

Original Air Date: March 5, 2023

Starring: Kristi Murdock and Jason Cook

Storyline: Jane Peterson, a marketing executive in the big city, loses her job and boyfriend both on the same day. Fed up, she vows to leave the city for good. Before she can though, she runs into a handsome and charming barista at a local coffee shop. As she rediscovers the city with him, it feels like something might be brewing!

Movie Review:

⛾ Something’s Brewing – Okay… something’s brewing, alright. In the first 5 minutes, Jane gets fired from her job, and she learns her live-in boyfriend, Aiden, is cheating on her. She arrives home early to their apartment, opens the bedroom door, and sees them together (if you know what I mean), but we see nothing, except for the two of them (the cheaters) walking out of the bedroom fully clothed. Not exactly the uplifting movie I was hoping to see. This movie is not family-friendly, based on those first few minutes. I watched the rest of the movie, which was fine, but it was rather slow and boring at times. Jane ends up meeting David, a single father, who works at a coffee shop. Overall, Something’s Brewing is not a keeper for me. ~Net

*NOTE: Instead of a new movie premiere on March 12th, it appears there will be a marathon of the sitcom, Last Man Standing, starring Tim Allen, for most of the day. Please stay tuned, in case there are any changes.

God Bless the Broken Road

Original Air Date / UPtv Newtork Premiere: March 19, 2023

Starring: Lindsay Pulsipher, Jordin Sparks, Kim Delaney, Patrika Darbo, Andrew Walker

*This movie first premiered in theaters in 2018. It has aired on Lifetime and other sources, but this will be the film's network premiere on UPtv.

Storyline: While grieving the loss of her husband, a financially struggling widow meets a race car driver.

Movie Review:

🏁 Finally watched God bless the Broken Road. It's very emotional and heavy, a lot. But it also has a spectacular ending. Highly recommend! –Maria

THE CONFESSION
UPlifting Musical

Original Air Date: March 26, 2023

Starring: Chondra Pierce and John Schneider

Storyline: In this musical adaptation of Beverly Lewis’ beloved novels, two worlds collide when a young Amish girl discovers she was adopted by a wealthy family. As she seeks her birth mother, she must overcome the obstacles of a lost fiance and a crafty gold-digger who seeks the fortune of her birth mother.

Movie Review:

🎵The Confession Musical – If you like musicals, then I suspect you will enjoy this one. I found it to be quite amusing and captivating, even though I already knew the story. In fact, I never thought it would be sooo funny, but it was, especially when the young woman pretended to be Amish. That was quite hilarious, and of course, comedienne Chondra Pierce brought a lot of humor and heart to her character. Well-known actor John Schneider played the bad guy in this, and while I’m used to him playing the nice guy, typically, he was fantastic in his role as the money-grubbing husband. Besides all the singing and dancing, The Confession Musical also had a heartwarming message about love, faith, and family. It is wholesome and family-friendly, if you don’t mind some of the Amish humor. ~Net

**********************

These are the movies confirmed for March, thus far. Please be sure to check back in case there are changes to the schedule.

I am personally looking forward to seeing this Amish musical version of The Confession. I've seen Chondra Pierce perform her comedy routine and share her testimony of faith in person; she is fantastic! And John Schneider is one of my all-time favorites. My big brother loved Dukes of Hazzard as we were growing up, so we'd often watch that General Lee in those memorable car chases. It has also been encouraging to see John Schneider in some inspirational films that have important meaning for this time, such as: Roe v. Wade and To Die For. I also think he's great in the Lifetime Christmas movies: Poinsettias for Christmas and Christmas in Tune. I was sad to learn of the recent passing of his wife, Alicia Allain, due to her fight with cancer. My heart and prayers go out to him and their family.

Please note: I haven't pre-screened the UPtv movies listed above. If you'd like to post a review on whether a film is family-friendly, please share in comments.

Happy movie-watching, everyone! Net
