September 11, 2001 - 25 Years Later...
Labor Day had passed. Summer was winding down. It began like an ordinary September morning... until suddenly, it wasn’t.
I still remember hearing the terrifying news that a plane had hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Was this an accident, I wondered.
I remember staring at the television, watching the smoke billowing from the tall building, my eyes filling with tears as I innocently thought, How will they ever get all of those people out? I was young and naive, I suppose, to think it possible.
When the second plane hit, we knew this was something far beyond what any of us had first imagined.
Everything seemed to stop around the world. People left work, school, and appointments. So many simply wanted to get home - to be with the people they loved.
My family gathered together in our den around the television, and we held each other. Even though we had other TVs throughout our home, no one wanted to be in another room that day. We wanted to be together. We wanted to stay close.
And we prayed together... as the unimaginable unfolded before us.
We called loved ones just to hear their voices and make sure they were okay. Not everyone had cell phones then, so reaching people wasn’t as easy as it is today.
I remember looking toward the sky and wondering where another plane might be headed. There were so many unknowns and so much fear.
We watched on TV - as brave firemen, police officers, and EMTs ran toward the danger in New York, while dazed office workers escaped with frightful looks of confusion on their faces.
Then came the news of the plane hitting the Pentagon. Rumors spread that the Capitol or the White House would be next. Federal buildings were then ordered to be evacuated.
Then Flight 93 crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. At the time, we didn’t know it would be the last plane. We still feared there could be more. In the days that followed, we would learn about the incredible courage and sacrifice of the heroes aboard that flight.
For days, and then weeks, the news seemed to stay on constantly. It was a heartbreaking, heavy time.
But amid all that darkness, I also remember something beautiful.
America came together. We were united.
American flags seemed to be flying everywhere. There was a renewed love for our country and a reminder of just how precious life, family, faith, and freedom truly are.
All these years later, I still vividly remember the fear and heartbreak of that September day. But I also remember the prayers, the heroes, and the way we all held one another a little tighter.
Today, I pray for the families who still carry the loss of September 11th. I pray we never forget the innocent lives taken, the heroes who sacrificed so much, and the countless lives forever changed.
And I continually pray that God will bring us peace and unity once again!
If you have thoughts you'd like to share about September 11th, please feel free to share in comments below.

Net, what an AMAZING job you did of writing your memory of that day. I felt goosebumps all over while reading your words. It brought me back to how I felt also. Fabulous writing of that day.
ReplyDeleteI loved this part, "My family gathered together in our den around the television, and we held each other. Even though we had other TVs throughout the house, no one wanted to be in another room that day. We wanted to be together. We wanted to stay close." That is how it felt that day. One room. stay close. Scary to even go to another room and be alone that day.
The Churches were full for weeks after that. Unfortunately, people went back to their old ways eventually.
Jim, Awww... Thank you so much! I'm so glad this touched you. It's hard to even imagine such evil exists in our world. So grateful we know that "greater is He that is in us, than he that is in the world!" (1 John 4:4)
DeleteYou are so right... people do easily revert back to old ways. If only we could all live in unity every day, as we did on September 12th.
I hope one day we can live in a more peaceful country. -Maria
ReplyDeleteMaria, Amen to this!!! That is my prayer!!! :)
DeleteI also remember staying close to my family that day. At the time, I wasn’t sure if we’d make it through it, but here we are 25 years later. I remember watching news nonstop too. I don’t remember seeing anything else. It was such a scary time. Christie
ReplyDeleteChristie, It certainly was a very scary time of uncertainty. I'm so glad you had your family close, too.
DeleteI remember every moment of that day, I was 23 years old at that time, I’m born in London, U.K, my aunt moved from London to New York City in the mid 70s, so most of my family visited her there regularly. I was living between Los Angeles & New York City at the time, my office was a few blocks away from the world trade centre, my work had me commute between cities & I loved it. I was in NYC up until 2 days before this terrible world changing event. I had gone home to London to visit friends & family for about a week. So I was out with my sister & friend at a mall and we saw a large crowd gather outside the Sony store, so of course we went to see what was happening, they had just watched the footage on the news of the first tower being hit. We were in disbelief, and then the second tower got hit. There are no words that can describe what was happening. I remember calling my mum, as I was in complete shock. The rest of the day was somber, we drove back home (40 minutes) in complete silence, with just the news radio on in the car. Getting home, I tried to contact everyone I knew in NYC, my aunt, friends, colleagues. It’s both vivid and a blur. I know lots of my friends lost loved ones that day, the world trade centre housed so many offices, businesses & was one of the most vibrant places to work. It was a tragedy to say the least & in my life it was the single event that changed the world, up until that point I don’t think I’d seen something so horrific. So many lives lost, and it felt personal I had so many friends & family in New York, in DC & it impacted everyone’s lives. To everyone who lost someone, you will always be in my prayers and thoughts. I can’t believe it’s been 25 years.
ReplyDeleteOh my... thank you so much for sharing your personal memory of September 11th. Even 25 years later, I can read the emotion in your words, especially knowing how closely connected you were to so many people there. I can't imagine what it must have been like to watch from so far away, wondering if everyone you loved was safe.
DeleteYou're so right, that day has changed the world in ways none of us could have imagined. So sorry for all your losses. Thank you for sharing with us and for keeping those who lost loved ones in your prayers. Please know... I join you in that prayer, and I pray we NEVER EVER forget.
Net, your thoughts and prayers on 9/11 - absolutely beautiful!! I went to church this morning and prayed for the families still suffering from that tragedy. I remember the day well - I was at my office (on the 16 floor, which in itself was nerve-wracking) when it happened. There was a tv in the conference room and many of us were gathered in that room to watch the events. So much was unknown at that time - who was responsible? Will there be another strike, and where? And the image of so many people in Manhattan running in the streets covered in ash - simply horrifying! I too pray that we will never see something like this again...and yet, unfortunately, it wouldn't surprise me...
ReplyDeleteMark, Thank you for your thoughtful words & for sharing your experience with us on September 11th... I cannot even imagine being on the 16th floor of a building on that day!!!! Oh my gosh...that had to be VERY eerie!!!!! I distinctly remember wondering, as you said - where another plane might hit. While our hearts ached for the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, & Flight 93, we couldn't help from fearing what might also be next... and I'm not a conspiracy theorist or anything, but I've heard there may have been a 5th plan and maybe more. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised, at all. And if they hadn't grounded flights so quickly, maybe others were in the early stages. Still so scary to think about all these years later - the emotions & feelings of that day so easily come back every year on the 11th. Praying fervently for peace!!!!!
DeleteThank you, Net for the heartfelt post. I highly recommend tge short film Boatlift on Pureflix. It really could be made into a full movie, but I don't know if my heart could take that. It was really hard to watch even the 17 min film.
ReplyDeleteMisty
Misty, thank you for sharing this!!! I will try to watch, but I must admit, I had a very hard time getting through the movie about Flight 93. Even though it stars many well-known actors I like, it still felt so real. It was heartbreaking to watch.
DeleteSo appreciate you sharing this info with us!
Such a beautiful tribute Net! I’m sitting here watching the stories on my lunch break with tears in my eyes, not fully comprehending that 25 years have already passed. Doesn’t seem possible. I remember holding my family tighter that day and weeks afterwards. It was a different time the way we all rallied together. May we Never forget.
ReplyDeleteAllie B, I know how you feel... my eyes still fill up with tears as I watch these stories, too... especially heroic stories like the man with the red bandana - just touch my heart so deeply!!!
DeletePraying with you that our country never forgets... especially future generations to come, but of course, they can never fully understand or feel what we did that day.
Beautiful post Net! I also remember where I was that day. I was in high school, and I heard some kids talking about things but social media was not big back then like it is now, so I saw no photos or videos. Then I got to my Spanish class in and our teacher really didn’t have class, she informed us of the details that had happened. Mark, I always remember those images as well- the people running in the streets covered in ash, some helping others walk, carrying others. When my husband and I visited New York years ago we went to the 9/11 memorial and it was beautiful, very hard to walk through it all, emotional to see everything they had for the victims, but so beautiful. Praying for our nation.
ReplyDelete~Paula
Paula, Thank you for sharing your memory of that day, too. Those images of people running from the Towers still play in my mind, as well. Even after all these years, seeing the footage replayed brings back so many of those same rush of emotions.
DeleteIt must have been such an incredible experience to visit the 9/11 Memorial in New York. I can only imagine how powerful it must be to stand there and see the names of so many innocent lives lost, while also taking in the beauty and peacefulness of the memorial. I'm so thankful their families and friends have such a meaningful place to go and remember their loved ones.
I am 86 years old and a friend of mine and I was on vacation and 2 days before 9/11 we was in Maine at a hotel and was swimming and I saw this young teenage in the hot tub and he was so red. I swam over to him and told him he should get out and cool off and he asked where we were from. I told himecwexwas on vacation from Indy and we were leaving for NYC the next day and he said, just you two ladies, I said yes and he said he had just moved from there and it was dangerous for two ladies to go there alone. I thought about that and felt so uneasy so I asked my friend if we could go to Nuagara Falls instead of NYC. We did and spent the night there and was eating breakfast when we heard the sad news. 9/11 was on our itenary to be at the world trade center that day. My family which had a copy started calling and checking to see if we were OK and was shocked that we was at Niagara Falls because I am one that doesn't deviate from my plans but the Lord used that young man to change our minds. We are so thankful to be alive but our hearts break for those who lost theirs.
ReplyDeleteOh my... that is an awesome story!!!! Do you think that young man could've been an angel - guiding you to redirect your path??? That is a story that truly gives me chills - knowing how easily you & your friend could've been on that flight. I truly believe as you do that The Lord protected you from danger. That whole situation is a miracle, for sure, but I understand how your heart aches for those who were not as blessed to change their plans that day.
DeleteThank you for sharing your powerful story. Twenty-five years later, we still remember and we will never forget.
We have a dear friend that thought his wife was at work in one of the towers. She stopped for coffee, held up in traffic thus arriving late to a scene none of us should witness. Keep your love ones close.
ReplyDeleteA heartfelt and moving tribute. Thank you.
-Gabe’s Mom
Gabe's Mom, That is wonderful news that your friend was late that day. Praise The Lord!!! I believe it must've been divine providence!!!
DeleteI heard a very similar story of a man who was in one of the Towers, he got out and thought for sure his wife who was supposed to be in the other Tower and expecting at the time would be gone, but then he found out, I think it was hours later, that she too was late getting to work and of course, she was perfectly fine, at least physically so. I'm sure they were both still very emotional over the loss of many of their co-workers, as your friends were, as well.
You are so right, September 11th is such a meaningful time to remember to keep our loved ones close.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful, uplifting story with us!!!!
I remember almost ready to go to school. My brother and I were in the first grade. My brother saw it on the tv first. I was so young I didn’t truly understand, but I remember my parents were shocked, my uncle’s best friend was a pilot who was killed on the plane. And there was constant prayer.
ReplyDeleteI just got back today from watching the Thunderbirds here in Owensboro. It was nice seeing so many tributes honoring them downtown.
I just watch some videos of people saying goodbye to their loved ones and I can’t help but cry and it’s also a little over Charlie Kirk’s murder.
Abigail, Oh my, first grade... you were just nearly babies!!! Wow, that must've been really hard to understand at that point.
DeleteI'm so sorry your uncle lost his best friend. That is so heartbreaking to hear.
Thank you for sharing about the Thunderbirds paying tribute... that sounds amazing!!!
Like you, my heart has also been breaking for the 9/11 victims & families and for Charlie Kirk's family & friends, as well. It has been such a somber week with a lot of emotion.
Thank you for sharing your September 11th memories with us.
I can remember this day like it was yesterday, being at school and there was an announcement on the intercom that an airplane hit the World Trade Center, then another airplane hit the WTC, we all had to go into the gymnasium, because the school didn't know what was happening yet, they wanted everyone in the same area for security reasons.
ReplyDeleteThe school even brought in a tv that was on a roller cart, so we all could see what was happening, mind you this is an old school tv that was 19 or so inches, so being on the bleachers you couldn't really see much and in truth looking back it might not have been the best choice for the schools superintendent to be showing high schoolers what was happening against America.
America changed forever after the attacks, the war on terror to fight against the Muslims that wanted us and all of America off the face of the Earth, yet the American government foolishly allowed Muslims into this country, who now have gotten political power, so we lost good men and women in the wars, only to see the people (Muslims) who came to America have such a hatred against our heroes and while in office say we deserved it.
Look at Michigan, the state is completely changed and more than likely will have a Muslim senator, that hates America.
I have friends and even a family member, who joined the military, because of 911 and it is infuriating to see the sacrifice, they gave and even more so for the families whose sons, daughters, husbands, wives, aunts and uncles who gave the ultimate sacrifice, to be forgotten and replaced by people that hate America and us.
People can call me racist all day long, I don't care, because when you have whole neighborhoods changed and they hate you, that is a problem.
Do I wish that wasn't the case, yes absolutely, but unfortunately, we in the Western societies, have seen all too many terrorist attacks since 911 and instead of hardening America and Europe from these attacks we have gotten more soft and that is a major problem, that we need to address.
If you are willing and able, say a prayer for all the family that lost loved ones today, twenty-five years ago and say one for the military families who also lost loved ones because of 911 and how they had to fight the war on terror, they need our prayers too.
On, another subject I can't believe that just yesterday was one year from the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a man of great love and faith for our Lord, Christ Jesus.
Charlie was a true follower of Jesus and even though he is younger I looked up to him. I say is, not was, because right now he is in the arms of our creator and please pray for Ericka and Charlie's kids, they need prayers too.
Thank you and may Jesus bless you and your family.
Joe, Appreciate you sharing your memories of September 11th. It is incredible how we all remember so clearly where we were that day, how we felt, and who we were with. I agree it is also important to remember who attacked us that day and that there is evil in this world who still wish harm on our country. My prayers continue to go out to the families who've lost their loved ones that day and to our military who stand against this evil on a daily basis. The ripple effect from that day continues to this day.
DeleteAnd my heart still breaks for the loss of Charlie Kirk. With all that is going on in the world, I believe we still need to have civil discussions with everyone, even with those who disagree. We desperately need his voice today. Praying with you - for his dear family & friends.
Thank you for your comment. God's blessings to you, as well!!!

Top Feature Films
United 93 (2006): Directed by Paul Greengrass, this critically acclaimed real-time drama tracks the hijacked flight that crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. It uses an objective, documentary-style approach without traditional movie stars to capture the raw terror and heroism of that day.

Hello Friends 🤗
ReplyDeleteMy dear Net- your words were just beautiful 🥹
As were everyone's memories 🥹😭
I come from a very Military purpose family, My Dad was in the Navy, one of my Uncles was a 4⭐⭐⭐⭐ General
in the Army, he lied about his age so he could go fight in WWII, he spent some time with the Great General Patton!!
I had a Cousin that was in the Pentagon at the time, he got hurt but refused to get out until he could get everyone possible to safety, even those that were already gone, but
You Never leave Anyone Behind 💞💞
Then he fought through his injuries to clear the way to go to Afghanistan & Iraq.
Knew people who had died in NY through family, friends or Church family🥹🥹🥹
I was taking care of my Parents 24/7 and was concerned on how to reassure them that with God's help, He would get Us All through this Evil Tragedy.
Neighbors flooded our house that day, checking on all of Us and they gave me some free time to gather myself -
God's Mighty Hand working through mostly Non Religious people - I'm always touched when someone is being used as a Vessel to do God's Work without necessarily knowing what a Blessing they are giving and also receiving 🙏🙏
I hope and Pray daily for all of Us to realize that We are always better together then apart.
I know that Revelations is coming to life and the Real Chaos hasn't even begun,
I just try to be a good person and do what is right in God's Eyes, of course I faulter daily-
But God helps me up and moves me forward-
God is the Ultimate Power and the Creator of
Never Leaving Anyone Behind!!
As I'm sure many of You, my eyes are red & puffy-
One year anniversary of Charlie being Murdered and then the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
9/10 was also the Birthday of one of my favorite Cousins, who has been gone awhile but missed always 💞💞
My Prayers were lifted up for All of you dear friends that you will continue to Feel God's Love, Grace, Mercy and His Extraordinary Strength and Peace 🙏🙏
