PLOT:
from Hallmark-
A rebellious teenager (Alex Black) is forced to spend the summer with his grandfather (Edward Asner), a retired World War II Colonel. Their differences may go deeper than just the years that seperate them, but the two slowly develop a mutual respect - and love - for one another.
Movie Review:
I loved watching the grandson and grandfather come together in this movie and bond. It was great to see their mutual respect for one another and their love.
I also thought it was sweet watching the boy ask the local girl out and it was so precious how the grandfather and his friends made them a very special dinner for their "first date".
Spoiler: There was a very sad ending.... as the grandfather, played by Ed Asner, passed away.
I do wish the story could have ended differently as it turned a very sweet story into a very sad one... and we were left wondering if the boy would go home now with his mother or somehow stay in his Grandfather's town. So many unanswered questions.

My husband really enjoyed watching Generation Gap with Edward Asner. BUT I walked into the room and interrupted him just as the boy was given a letter at the end. The last thing he saw was the couple walking away from the cemetery. What did the letter say? What was its significance? Thanks so much for your help.

I have been using this as my e-mail signature line since my husband died but never realized where it came from. I just watched the movie and cried like a baby when I heard it, New Year's Eve 2011. Wish I could find a copy of the movie but it seems impossible to find.
One of the last lines in the letter from his grandfather given at the cemetery said:

I've been using these two lines in my e-mail signature since my husband died 16 months ago but didn't know where it originated. I cried like a baby to hear it in this movie on New Year's Eve 2011. I've been trying to find a copy of the video to buy but apparently they never published it for sale.
I have watched this movie so many times & I watch it every time it comes on. I still cry when it ends. I just love it. I live by the saying 'death leaves a heartache that no one can heal, love leaves a memory that no one can steal'. Marc

I have tried to see on the credits where the movie was filmed..love the small town scenes..but they always shrink the credits at the end!! Can anyone tell me the name of the location?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure where they did the small town scenes but the grandfather's house is in Alhambra, California. The rest of the town is filmed somewhere else.

ReplyDeleteI recorded "Generation Gap" on my DVR. I watched it, not expecting anything over the top but I was surprised. The story is so heart-warming and also heart-breaking in the end. This is truly now a favorite film of mine. It has that same magic that a lot of family films from the 80's and 90's had that's missing in a lot of films and television programs nowadays. I miss popping in a movie or switching on the tv and not seeing the disgusting things that are on television now. I highly recommend this movie. I'm a grown 29 year old man and this movie had me crying like a baby at the end.
