The Edge of The Garden - Hallmark Channel

MOVIE REVIEW

The Edge of The Garden

Network: Hallmark Channel

Original Air Date: May 14, 2011

CAST:

Rob Estes ... Brian
Sarah Manninen ... Nora
David Lewis ... Thomas
Kelly Monaco ... Julie

PLOT:

A lonely businessman temporarily relocates to Maine after a bad breakup. He moves into a rundown cottage, where he meets the beautiful spirit of a woman who lived in the house fifty years before. As they form a friendship, they begin to help each other in ways they never knew were possible, and change both their fortunes forever.

Movie Review:

This movie may have been fantasy, but it was also quite fascinating!

Brian, a man from Present day has gone off to work in Maine - away from his own family, friends, co-workers, and ex-fiance. He buys this cottage and instantly starts to see odd things. In the past, he has always been too busy with his work to have a personal life, but when he meets Nora at the Edge of the Garden - everything changes!

The fantasy part is... that Nora is from 1960 - 50 years ago! It doesn't seem at all to be spooky or evil, just fantasy. (It reminded me a little of Back to the Future - when Marty goes back to the past and meets his parents and slightly changes the future!)

I wouldn't recommend this movie for children or family movie night. There was no language or immorality; however, this story might be confusing for them.

Nora and Brian continue to meet at the Edge of the Garden to talk. He helps her through her problems and her illness, and eventually convinces her to make a big step in her life - that finally sets her free and leads her towards the path of happiness. In turn, it finally leads Brian to "True Love", as well.

It's an interesting and beautiful story of love that is set in the past, present, and future...

  1. I am so grateful for this movie. I wish it came out earlier because I just can't wait to see it. I absolutely adore Rob Estes but not really as principal in 90210. i don't think the adults should be so involved in the show, the original was a success because it was about the TEENAGERS (played by 30 year old ian ziering who is now 80 on shows like "i'm a celebrity, get me out of here")(but I did love luke perry like any other puberest young lady)(I digress) but I do believe that Rob Estes is capable of being a real leading man. He is dreamy. (speaking of mcdreamy, are he and meredith officially married? having a baby? what's the status? I stopped watching when Kathrine Heigl said she was leaving and george died. What an awful decision on the show's part to let him go!) This movie is going to be the best one ever! Go Hallmark! Shout out to Jennie Garth and her sexy man! Go Organic!

  6. I really liked this movie. The only thing that I am wondering about is that I didn't think that we had any worry about ticks and lyme disease in Maine in 1960 (I am from Maine and we grew up playing in fields and playing in the woods in Maine in the 50's and 60's.) I realize that maybe they hadn't named the disease yet, but I also thought that the ticks that carry the disease were not up into Maine, or at least our part of Maine until more recently.

    1. It's been around and in that area for a long time. It didn't have a specific name until the 70s. In fact, it is more prevalent in forested areas than any place else and why you don't find much of it in places like New Mexico.

    2. No it was there but they had different names for it and what they thought it was way back. They gave it a name in the 70s I believe. There is a foundation for Lyme disease in Maine. The Northern part of the Eastern seaboard is prevalent with the ticks. It is only reduced by cutting down the forest areas for the most part but now they have good treatments for it. There are things that are recommended to spray on one's clothing. You may have been lucky where you played as a child.

    3. I am a sufferer of Lyme disease and it will always be the most painful summer of my life (and the reacurance 2 years later)
to the person from Maine...I just traveled thru Maine (beautiful country) and on into Canada.. Along with the twelve people on our trip were two dogs. We're from Maryland and I'm sure no one thought a thing about what those beautiful dogs were carrying in their fur! Even medical necessary dogs gotta go out once in a while. Mary Beitzel

  12. I loved the movie also, but didn't understand where her husband came in - in the present, I mean. So, she survived, and her husband Tom did not?

  13. This was a pretty good movie. Very much like the Lake House in principle, but entertaining.

Yes, Tom died in the end! It was strange that they didn't show what happened after Bryan 'left' because it seems like if she tried to get away he would've just shot at her. And if she did manage to leave then why didn't he too? A bit weak here, but in view of the overall plot, alright. (it was so sweet that she married Frank!)

  14. Can someone tell me the end of the movie as my TV went off and I do not know what happened after he went to visit her at the nursing home...please at norma823@aol.com

  15. At the end, she introduced him to her granddaughter who looked just like her (basically because it was played by the same younger version of Nora). They left together and that was the end. Hopefully by now, you saw it again.

  16. The past, the present an the future exist simultaneously separated only by psychological distance, which can be close or distant. My, how refreshingly "Sethian" this story is. ron

  21. This movie was so magical.. I love movies that have entwined with the past and the present. I would LOVE to see movies made from 2 books that I have read several times each written by Jude Deveraux:
"A Knight in Shining Armor" and "Legend". Both books are set in the past & future and are absolutely magically !! To see what Hallmark has done with "The Edge of The Garden", I can only imagine how awesome these two books would be if they were made into movies. If anyone enjoyed The Edge of The Garden, you would not believe how much you would enjoy "A Knight in Shining Armor" and "Legend". I hope the directors or producers read these reviews and pick up these books and read them, they would surely agree that making them into a movie is a true winner!!

  22. Yes, do get a copy of "Somewhere in Time." It is a classic and actually has somewhat of a cult following. I own a copy and never get sick of watching. Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve were magical!

  34. That really was a wonderful movie. My only critics is that the beginning of the movie should have been slower, taking more time to get to know the male Protagonist. But the idea behind that story is marvellous.
