PBS Masterpiece to recreate Little Women in 3 Part Production

Since Louisa May Alcott first wrote the beloved tale Little Women, published in 1868, about four spirited young women, the March sisters - Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, and their Mother who endured life on the home-front during America's Civil War, it has been cherished by many and re-created in countless ways. There have been plays given on stage and Little Women has been filmed on screen in stories nearly straight from Alcott's fountain pen, as well as re-creations made with modern spins! From silent film, Broadway plays, school productions, musicals, television series, theater movies, and so on...

Since the Spring, there was news that PBS would be recreating this story and recently PBS re-confirmed this news, with full casting details at their TCA event!

PBS will now venture to re-create the timeless masterpiece of Little Women- as their own, for their weekly Masterpiece Television Series! News on who will officially star in this miniseries has been revealed via a PBS Press Release...

The cast includes...

*Angela Lansbury (of "Murder, She Wrote," which airs nightly on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries) will play Aunt March, the girls' wealthy relative.

*Michael Gambon will appear as the family’s neighbor, Mr. Laurence.

*Jonah Hauer-King will portray Mr. Laurence's grandson Laurie,

*Emily Watson will play Marmee March, the girls' mother.

The March Sisters will be portrayed by ...

Willa Fitzgerald will play the eldest daughter Meg,

Maya Hawke takes the role of willful and adventurous Jo,

Annes Elwy will play shy, sweet Beth,

and Kathryn Newton will portray the role of the youngest sister Amy.

According to PBS's press release, "the Little Women three-part drama (consisting of three hours) will be scripted by Heidi Thomas, well-known to PBS audiences for her acclaimed adaptations of Call the Midwife and Cranford."

My hope.... Typically, the Little Women movies progress over a period of time, which includes Christmas - so there's a good possibility this one might also include the Holiday Season! (We shall see!)

Little Women is filming in Ireland, and is coming to TV - to your local PBS station in 2018! Stay tuned for further details!!!

  1. This looks so good, Net! I sure hope they put Christmas in this version. All the ladies look lovely, but I'm wondering if there might be a secondary actress to play a younger version of Amy, too.

    1. I was wondering the same thing, Abby, about the youngest sister, Amy! I know the story version with Wynona Ryder required them to use a younger and older person to portray the part. I guess it depends on where they start the story. My guess is yes. I checked IMDB when I posted this, but (at this time) there is only one listing, so far, for the character of Amy.

Thanks for sharing your love of Little Women and Christmas, Abby!

      Blessings, Net :)

  2. I don't watch Masterpiece as much as I used to, but I will make it a point to watch Little Women. That book was always my favorite as a girl, but I do wish someone would create a happier outcome for poor innocent Beth.

    1. Yes, I've always wished for a different outcome for dear, sweet Beth, as well. That part is nearly unbearable to watch. Too real. But, it wouldn't be the same story without the loss of Beth.

Perhaps, that is what has struck a chord with people over the years, the true human side of the story... happy times, and sad times, joy, heartbreak, loss, and love.

      Thank you for sharing, Anonymous.

    1. Exactly, the press release states, " 'The mini-series is a storytelling form unique to television, and the opportunity to adapt Louisa May Alcott’s novel over three hours is a gift from the BBC and MASTERPIECE on PBS,' said executive producer Callender. "

Therefore, one can gather from that statement, that this 3 part production will each be an hour a piece.
