The movie just premiered on Lifetime within the last 2 months. Most of the time, Lifetime does not release DVDs this soon after a movie has premiered.

For that matter, even most Hallmark movies don't get to DVD right after debuting (if ever). The ones that do hit the shelves right away are usually special cases, like a deal cut with Walmart or something -- and even then, there are only 3 or 4 movies released right away. Anything else that ends up on DVD usually won't show up until autumn of the following year, and sometimes 2 or more years later.

    1. Alot of Lifetime's movies are produced by Marvista Entertainment and usually on DVD and VOD before or shortly after premiering.

Most of Lifetime's regular, run-of-the-mill Christmas movies are not on DVD immediately after airing, let alone before. The problem is -- when it happens a couple of times or in very specific cases, people think that it is going to happen all the time. The majority of the time, Lifetime's Christmas movies are not out on DVD quite that fast, nor are any others made for other channels. They will get to DVD eventually (or in Hallmark's case, maybe never) -- but not right after the premiere.

Another thing to consider is whether or not a movie was made FOR and BY a specific channel, as opposed to whether or not a movie was sold TO a channel. That happens as well. A movie might be made by a particular company like MarVista or a lesser-known company, but not designated for any specific channel. If it is then sold to a channel, then that could impact how quickly a movie gets to DVD. In fact, the movie might have already been on DVD before being sold to a network.

Take "Christmas Trade," for example (from 2015). I don't believe it was specifically made for UP. I believe it was sold to UP, and was probably already out on DVD or just about to hit DVD before it aired on the UP channel.

BUT, in the case of a movie that is specifically made for and by a channel -- whether it is for Lifetime, Hallmark, ION, UP, etc. -- the movies might take longer to get to DVD. If the movie has a higher budget or bigger affiliations of some sort, i.e., "Northpole," "Turkey Hollow," "Grumpy Cat," etc., then the plan to release the movie on DVD is already in place when the movie is made.

And then there are the special, exclusive contracts -- such as Walmart selling a small handful of Hallmark movies immediately after airing. Those movies will come out right away, because that is in the contract.

But again, MOST of the time, your average, standard, simple Christmas movie made for and by a channel, without any bigger affiliations or ties, and without any exclusive contract for a big merchandiser to sell it, will not get to DVD right after airing. It will usually take several months, at least, if not longer.

There is no reason to think that "Gift-Wrapped Christmas" was part of a bigger distribution deal up front, and it doesn't have any bigger affiliations (like Jim Henson's empire or the Grumpy Cat phenomenon). Was it even made by MarVista? I am guessing it will get to DVD this year, but I don't think it was ever intended to be released to DVD right after airing.

  15. Sometimes Lifetime does release their movies rather quickly... as in the case of Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever - it premiered on TV November 29, 2014, and came out on DVD, December 16, 2014. Plus, Jim Henson's Turkey Hollow premiered on TV November, 21, 2015 and was released on DVD, November 24, 2015. So, I guess it just depends on what they think will be a big seller. Hopefully, they will see everyone's interest in this delightful Christmas movie: "A Gift Wrapped Christmas" and release it, too!

I know, but as I mentioned above, "most of the time" Lifetime does not release DVDs so soon after. There are always exceptions to any rule, but it's not the norm for most of their movies to get to DVD that fast, nor is it the norm for most of Hallmark's movies.

I think it's important to make that clear to people so they don't get their hopes up and expect that all Christmas movies will be out on DVD within a month or two of airing, let alone within a couple of days after airing.

Lifetime obviously already had a plan to release the specific titles you mentioned, Net -- the plan was in place before the movies aired, and that was likely due to the Henson legacy/connection as well as the whole Grumpy Cat "franchise" and pre-existing popularity. Those movies likely had bigger budgets.

But most of the time the movies do not come out for a while, if at all -- especially just a simple Christmas movie like "A Gift-Wrapped Christmas" that doesn't have bigger ties and affiliations.

I think that Lifetime is slightly better about releasing movies on DVD than Hallmark is, though -- meaning that more of the Lifetime movies get to DVD than the Hallmark movies do.

    2. You're right, Net. Some come out quickly and others just don't. It depends on a lot of different things. Since this is one a lot of us really liked, a sweet and simple Christmas movie like Sherry said, we'll probably have to wait a long time.

  16. As for the movie "A Gift Wrapped Christmas" coming on dvd, I hope so too. But when you look at all the movies we have been begging for for years to be put on dvd, well, let's see if anyone is listening.
