A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Tomorrow, September 25th, marks 3 Months now until Christmas!

This 1945 film will be airing Tuesday Night (Sept. 25) on TCM, 8 PM - 10:15 PM (est). It's a great Classic Christmas Movie that hasn't been played as much, in recent years, on TV. It's deeply moving - happy and sad, at times.

It will air several more times, during the Christmas Season. See times airing on the Christmas TV Schedule.

MOVIE REVIEW

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Original Air Date: 1945

CAST:

Dorothy McGuire ... Katie Nolan
Joan Blondell ... Aunt Sissy
James Dunn ... Johnny Nolan
Lloyd Nolan ... Officer McShane
James Gleason ... McGarrity
Ted Donaldson ... Neeley Nolan
Peggy Ann Garner ... Francie
Ruth Nelson ... Miss McDonough
John Alexander ... Steve Edwards
B.S. Pully ... Christmas Tree Vendor

PLOT:

(from Wikipedia)

The film covers several months in the life of the Nolans, an Irish American family living in the Williamsburg neighborhood in the borough of Brooklyn in New York City in 1900. Katie Nolan (Dorothy McGuire) is a hard-working housewife who scrubs the floors of her tenement building and collects rags for sale to a scrap fabric dealer to help feed her family. She's married to Johnny Nolan (James Dunn), an alcoholic and waiter who is a happy man and good father but unable to earn a living to support his family. The Nolans have two children, 13-year-old Francie (Peggy Ann Garner) and 11-year-old Neeley (Ted Donaldson).

Movie Review:

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a heartwarming movie. There is something so real about this little family in Brooklyn, who does their best to make ends meet.

Francie, the daughter, wants to be a writer and dreams of making a better life for herself. Life is tough, at times, and the family bonds together to make it through these difficult times.

The movie explores the real themes of life and death. You may be moved to tears.

Peggy Ann Garner is absolutely Wonderful in her portrayel of young Francie, who often has the weight of the world on her shoulders. She was so good she won the Oscar for Most Promising Juvenile Performer.

Dorothy McGuire is remarkable as the practical, firm Mother, who does her best to save every penny, in spite of her husband, Johnny (James Dunn), who is a well liked waiter in the community and a well-known drunk. James Dunn won an Oscar for his portrayel.

Joan Blondell is memorable, fun, and sassy as Francie's Aunt. She makes Francie dream even more of getting out of their present state of being poor in their tenement apartment.

Through all of their ups and downs, Francie finds encouragement through a Tree that grows in Brooklyn. There are some moments that are simply heartbreaking, yet throughout the film, there is the sentimental story of childhood innocence in the face of true reality.

See or Skip:

See. This is a family film classic. I would rate this movie as "PG".

It's a decent movie, but not suitable for very young children.

* A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is Available on DVD.

Some Movie Fans are NOT Happy with the Trailer for A Christmas Story 2

It’s being reported online, that fans of the classic beloved movie, A Christmas Story, are upset over A Christmas Story 2, the official movie sequel to their beloved film. I know there are some who don't like this movie, and some people who enjoy this movie every year at Christmas time. And then, there are those fans who are absolutely crazy over it!

Through social media sites these fans are saying - the film is Horrible and other Terrible adjectives, just from viewing the Trailer.

Let me know what you think, or if you care!

Here's the Trailer :
(No Foul Language is spoken - however, it is implied)

Here's my thought on it... It's just a Movie. If you're interested - see it. If you're not - then skip it. Many are putting it down now, but give it a few years and it will probably be just as popular as the first.

I liked that the movie looked somewhat old-fashioned and the fact, that Ralphie and Randy look like a good match to the original actors. It's a movie filled with Slapstick Comedy - so what more can you expect. Of course, it's going to be a little cheesy.

A Christmas Story 2 will be released on DVD - October 30, 2012. It can be pre-ordered now. It is Rated PG.

For more movie details, see the A Christmas Story 2 page. You will also find my review there.

"Home Alone Movie Day" on FMC

September 14, 2012 (Friday) is Home Alone Movie Marathon Day on FMC (Fox Movie Channel)! Sounds like a great day to order a Cheese Pizza all for yourself and settle in and watch all 4 Home Alone Movies! Unfortunately, they start early though - so unless you have the day off of work/school and like pizza for breakfast, this may or may not work. Or, there's always the tivo or dvr!

HOME ALONE

7:55 AM on FMC

The original movie airs first, following Miracle on 34th Street (the 1994 version), which airs just before it at 6 AM. So, if you get up early, you can let FMC really put you in the Holiday Spirit! To me, this Home Alone is forever my favorite of the series. It's perfect in every way. My favorite scene is when Kevin talks to his elderly neighbor at the church. After all the years, I still see the beauty in it beyond all the great comedy.

HOME ALONE 2: Lost in New York

9:40 AM on FMC

This is the second movie in the series, and while many sequels disappoint - this one is still terrific! It has every element from the first movie that we all fell in love with before - a sense of loss, forgiveness, and finding renewed strength and love in family! And, of course, the fact that it's the same Kevin, plus all the same family characters and Marv and Harry, too - that makes it great!

HOME ALONE 3

11:45 AM on FMC

The story of Home Alone 3 is based during the winter, but it isn't really a Christmas Movie. Originally, Macaulay Culkin was supposed to star as Kevin in this story, too, but those plans fell through and the role was re-casted. It's the first movie where the main character is not named Kevin. (Instead, it's Alex.) It's a cute movie, just not the same as the first two.

HOME ALONE 4: Taking Back the House

1:30 PM on FMC

In this made-for-television sequel, the main boy has been named Kevin, but it's not Macaulay Culkin (who was much older at this point) who portrays the role. This movie has a lot of the funny elements of being home alone and dealing with catching robbers. It's not the same as the original movies, but I find that children still enjoy it.

I hope you enjoy your day of Christmas Movies on FMC. Later that night at 7 PM and 9 PM , they will be playing Alvin and the Chipmunks, which also has Christmas in it!

And, if you are interested in more HOME ALONE MOVIES, then you'll be excited to know that ABC Family will be bringing us a 5th movie in the series during their Countdown of 25 days of Christmas! Click Here for more details for Home Alone 5 : Alone in the Dark.

Have a Great Day ... and hopefully you can share that Cheese Pizza!

"Last Ounce of Courage" Christmas Movie

If you have seen promotional trailers for the movie, "Last Ounce of Courage", then you are sure to know that the film stands up strongly for freedom, patriotism, and our Military. However, perhaps you didn't know (from the previews) that it is also about Christmas!

Movie description from "Last Ounce of Courage" press release:
“Last Ounce of Courage,” distributed by Veritas Entertainment and releasing in theaters nationwide Sept. 14, 2012 is the story of a grieving father inspired by his grandson to take a stand for faith and freedom against a tide of apathy and vanishing freedoms. Alongside fellow citizens of courage, faith, and integrity, he is a champion for the cherished principles “we the people” hold dear. Built on the themes of freedom, family and faith, “Last Ounce of Courage” seeks to honor the men and women who have sacrificed so dearly for our nation’s freedoms and inspire individuals to not take those freedoms for granted, but stand up bravely for what they believe.

The cast includes Marshall Teague (Roadhouse), Jennifer O’Neill (Summer of ‘42), Fred Williamson (Black Ceasar) and Jenna Boyd (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants).

Film Synopsis from CFDb:
The approaching holiday season sets the scene for a battle, long in the making.

Christmas is under attack. The true celebration of Christ’s birth has been lost in a sea of tolerance and apathy.

Bob Revere, a decorated veteran and mayor, reconnects with his past when his alienated grandson, Chris, moves back to town. Through the discovery of a series of video diaries found in a footlocker, Chris wrestles with understanding the supreme sacrifice that his father Thomas made fighting for their freedom. Even more poignantly, realizing that their own freedoms have been slipping away, Bob and Chris question that while Thomas died fighting for their freedom, what are they doing now? What can one grandpa do? What can one kid do?

As the story unfolds, we find out just how much difference one ordinary person can make. Bob, the grandpa who serves as mayor of his hometown as it is entering the holiday season, determines to bring back the “true” celebration of Christmas to Mount Columbus. Chris encounters his own challenges for freedom at school while Bob’s fight for freedom brings him face to face with the hard-hitting ACLO.

Find out what happens as Bob exclaims, “My fight isn’t about colored lights and a Christmas tree on the city square. It’s about freedom, and taking back what’s been stolen from us. One by one we have lost freedoms that our forefathers, our brothers in arms and my son died for. It’s time we stand up for what they died for, for what we believe in.”

This movie is Rated PG and Dove Family-Approved.
