MOVIE REVIEW

How to Fall in Love

Originally Titled: Love's Playing Our Song

Network: Hallmark Channel

Original Air Date: July 21, 2012

CAST:

Eric Mabius ... Harold White
Brooke D'Orsay ... Annie Hayes
Kathy Najimy ... Kim
Jody Thompson ... Claire Russell
Gina Holden ... Julie Owens
Panou ... Willie Taylor

PLOT:

An accountant, who never quite grew out of his awkward teenage years, finds himself with a dating coach - she happens to be his high school crush as well. Thanks to his coach, he gets a pretty woman he has his sights on for some time, but realizes they are incompatible. Meanwhile, his dating lessons with his teenage crush reawaken old feelings. Not realizing the feelings are mutual, he finds himself unable to act on them due to his fear of being rejected by the one he truly loves.

Still suffering from the ugly-duckling syndrome that branded his youth, Harold White (Mabius) hires Annie Hayes (D’Orsay), the pretty and popular girl he knew in high school, to be his dating coach and help him shed his wallflower approach to romance. Annie even enlists her friend Kim (Najimy), a waitress at a local diner, to be Harold’s practice date. Annie draws Harold out of his shell and teaches him to win over a new love interest with the help of their shared passion for classic love songs. But when sparks unexpectedly fly between “student” and “teacher,” both Harold and Annie must learn how to make up for past mistakes if they’re going to hold onto true love.

Movie Review:

This was a refreshing and delightful romantic comedy. I loved the bubbly personality of Annie Hayes, who was the popular girl from high school - turned event planner - still seeking to find direction in her life and I loved the true awkwardness of Harold White, the class nerd, turned accountant – who still considered himself to be the ugly duckling from high school.

There was a powerful scene where Harold looks in the mirror and still sees that awkward and rather geeky teenager he used to be staring back at him. I think we all can relate in some degree... seeing the flaws in ourselves - instead of what is really there.

The story was completely romantic and fun – and gave great tips on dating: have confidence, practice communicating, open up to others, follow your heart, and so on, etc...

The movie was a great guide for single people – so I think it will really appeal to them and married people who love romance and enjoy reliving the thrill of falling in love - will love it, too!

It's an easy movie to fall in love with!

  3. I really loved this movie, it's played on occasion on movie central here in Canada. I've seen it a couple times and I don't want to delete it from my pvr! It's called The Dating Coach here though...don't know why the title is different. I know it's the same movie though from the plot and actors.

  4. I just rented this film from Blockbuster and was pleasantly surprised! Nowadays movies are so dark and inappropriate, so it's hard to find uplifting old-fashioned romantic films.

I was surprised at how touching this one is, and I have to say it's because of the great combo of actors, director and writer. The blonde girl reminds me of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman - so cheerful and fun, lighthearted and expressive.

Eric Mabius was a surprise! I loved the way he acted as the shy guy - he didn't overplay it all. His quiet looks just moved me - maybe because that kind of smart shy guy is my ideal!

I liked this movie so much that I watched it twice before returning it, and I now bought it online. I wish Hallmark makes more high-quality movies like this. I rented another one about a bride, but was not impressed.
